Can’t look for transfers because it’ll hurt paolo, Griffin and keels feelings. In a year with 100s of transfers, and a super thin duke roster, we got one transfer and it wasn’t even the best post man from that school. It’s pitiful.

Wasn’t bate considered a walk on? I’m assuming he’ll get a scholly since we have 4 open spots but yeah… sucks. I really wanted to see coach k have the best last season possible but the roster is still shaky imo. Still worried for sheyer too. Garcia could’ve been an excellent piece for Jon to build with next year.
Not being mean here, but say Duke went hard after a transfer, how much would they play given what the roster looks like right now?
An experienced 2 guard could start at the 2. Bring Keels and Moore off the bench. Everyone else is loading up. Look at Kentucky and Gonzaga and UCLA's backcourts. We have gotten so scared of running guys off but they are leaving anyway.
Duke needs 1 more guard. i think we may see more teams try to build a team like Baylor did .

This is UNC, Garcia might be there 4 more years. They get them to stay.
I don't disagree, but if the freshmen are slow out of the gate and Moore, Baker and Roach take some time to make the jump, I would say a transfer could have played plenty.
Duke really has 6 guys that will play a lot, then you have Baker, Blakes and John. While I think those three can be good, they will probably not compete for the starting spots.
So, with only 6 guys fighting for 5 starting positions, I definitely think a transfer could have helped. I'm not even saying a transfer looking to play only 1 season either...but Duke could have been a little more aggressive on the transfer portal.
He will play major sub minutes at 4 and 5 but do you really think we will see our 3 bigs playing at the same time?
I think our perspective as Duke fans as to the need for a transfer is different from the perspective of a transfer looking to get more minutes. If I'm a good but not elite transfer I'm thinking Moore and Roach have the guard spots sewn up and Keels is going to get minutes so I'm competing against 3 others for PT.

It's hard to get a read on this team. If Roach or Williams gets injured we're sunk. We need Keels and Griffen to be good shooters. Can John stay healthy? Can Moore and Baker shoot well? This could be a first weekend team or a final four team. I dont think we have much margin for error. Other than the 4 and 5 I am not sure what we will get. If Keels shoots the lights out that will be big.

Definitely not. I mean sure it COULD happen at one time or another but no way will it be anything we ever go to more than once or twice.
And @timritterus whats your definition of plenty of time? I mean for me 10min is about right for him. Some nights maybe 2-5mpg some games 12-20mpg. But every single one will be based on circumstance.
I don't disagree here, I was just hoping for some additional depth, even if it was another combo guard, it would have been nice.
Yeah depth is our issue this year. We cannot afford any of our best guys to be out for long stretches of the season. The Baldwin miss hurts most for the reasons You mentioned.
I think he will be in the 15-18 range regularly. We won't ever play all 3 big guys at the same time, but I do think he will play occasionally with Williams, and often with Paolo. His experience will be important for this team. I also think foul trouble will dictate his minutes often. I don't see Mark getting huge minutes. Probably around 25 per game, at most 27ish. There will also be times I think he will be in at the 5 with both other bigs out and Griffin or Moore sliding to the 4. I know there will also be times where Paolo is at the 5 and we go smaller. Overall, I don't think he gets starter minutes (like Keels/Moore off the bench), but I just think he will play a significant role as our only big man off the bench.

So we were able to convince a guy like Theo John to come to duke with paolo and mark already there, but a guy like Garcia is a bit too much? What about Justin McKoy or Brady manek? Are those guys guaranteed starts with tons of minutes too? There were tons of options for the staff to go after to better this team. It’s one thing not landing guys because the minutes problem but they didn’t even try. it’s similar to last year in which we had a potentially strong team that really could’ve used some solid experienced talent but they chose not to try to pad some extra support for the team. Don’t even get me started on tape either, bless his heart but puzzling move
I keep saying it and I’ll say it again. We have 9 duke level talent basketball players on the roster next year. Yeah, maybe our first 5-7 guys are pretty strong. Running such a thin roster is asking for trouble though. Imagine if one or two guys get hurt? What about practices ? Someone’s going to be playing against a lower level player constantly. That effects the team improvement too.

I would if I were them. Would a transfer really get many minutes on this team next year? Keels didn't commit to play 10 min per game. It would be nice to get a solid guard to fill a 10-15 min per game role, but I doubt there are many out there looking for that kind of role. If we got a "star" transfer, someone is getting recruited over.
I think John gets 12-15 minutes a game if he is healthy. We had far more depth last year than this year. Even just a transfer shooter off the bench could have helped. Other schools are doing it. I suppose we have enough if healthy. We were lucky in 2010, we were one guard injury away from an early exit.

I fear that Krzyzewski's traditionally thin bench hurts him here. Duke did reach out to Furman transfer Noah Gurley but I think Gurley just couldn't see any PT for him at Duke.
If Bates Jones can give us a few minutes a game that would be huge. He looks like a decent shooter in his highlights.
Don’t see that happening Chris. Think he was a favor to the Jones family. But hopefully he can be a good locker room guy and a solid practice player.
Sometimes I think y’all forget who the coach is. He likes to play a thin bench. Eight players is what he really want to play. So having 10 or 12 does no justice because they won’t play. That’s why you had guys that played last year transfer out. They saw the writing on the wall. Why would a quality transfer come to Duke to be the #8 or 9 man on the bench? Whatever player you think is really good you might as well cross him off the list because he’s not coming to sit behind freshmen. It’s as simple as that.

I consider a recruited player as someone who’s expected to contribute in games. I’m with timo on this one.kid averaged 12 minutes a game with 2.6 ppg and rpg? I seriously doubt Duke was like hey look at this kid he can really contribute to creating a better team let’s see if he wants to come over here. I think jones called duke to see if we’d take him.
I’ll give you gurley, I had always read that it wasn’t official Duke contacted him but I know you know more than us average fans. They should’ve cast a wider net though imo still. Uk recruits very similar and had almost the same season we did last year and even they landed four transfers. Like you said I also believe it’s gonna hurt us hard this year in terms of limiting the true potential of this team

Jalen Washington a 5 star big man commits to UNC. Early results suggest Davis may be a big time recruiter.
Or the fact that Garcia and Bacot won’t be around after next season which I doubt they will.
UNC has always got bigs. Their offense always caters to running two bigs on the floor at one time.
I don’t think any transfer is really looking for less time on the court it’s the reason most are transferring or going to a school that better fits their skill and mindset.
That and come February when has K ever gone nine to ten deep? It would have to be a transfer that was ready to wait until the following year to get minutes and it wasn’t happening. Garcia was a heavy UNC lean until they landed Kessler, McCoy has plenty of minutes to be had at sf for UNC.it simply is what it is .
He was also a hard UNC lean prior to Kessler committing and was a border line five star according to articles. I’ll give him the 2022 five star but I’ll say that Garcia knew he could start and really wanted to attend UNC last season but their front court was loaded.
