When the vacancy happens, that thread will be very different than this one.

Yeah. It’s both going to be the hottest and most unenviable job out there. Who wants to play follow-up to Krzyzewski? Duke fans have been spoiled for decades. So, whomever Duke chooses has to be able to deliver from Day One; a feat that’s easier said than done.

Most conjecture out there speaks to the notion that it will be someone in the Krzyzewski coaching tree. There’s just one problem with that: there aren’t many who have been successful. Granted, none are coaching at premier programs on the level of Duke. They have to earn the privilege to land even a four star kid. On the other side of this, they also get to truly coach kids. It’s just... they really haven’t done so on the same level as a guy like Roy Williams.

So. Who could it be? Wojo’s name gets thrown around a lot. And, I could easily see them going with him if he continues to build up Marquette. If he remains stagnant? I don’t see it.

Another popular name is Hurley. Hurley is a lot like Krzyzewski, in both good and bad ways. He has the same temperament that he did as a player. However, if continues his positive momentum, maybe.

Tommy Amaker? Nothing excites me about him. Sorry Tommy. Love ya but no. Same with Collins.

But... there are a few names I haven’t heard many discuss because frankly, they’d be long shots. But, if Duke came with the offer to replace the legend? Maybe. Quinn Snyder is first on this list. At one point, he was seen as the heir apparent. And then, he wasn’t. He’s killing it in the NBA, and maybe killing it too much for him to leave. But getting the Duke job might be the offer he would accept. The other long shot is Mike Brey. Again... don’t know if he’d bolt at this stage in his career. But maybe?

And, then we have Brad Stevens. He’s the guy we all want. In him, we see an alternate timeline to what might have been Krzyzewski’s career if things might have gone a bit differently. I think Krzyzewski’s stint with USA basketball allowed him to scratch his NBA itch. Still, he should be the prime target. It’s hard to leave the Boston Celtics. That’s a premier job. But, Stevens is a coach’s coach. And, you don’t do that much coaching in the League. Having the chance to become the next legendary coach at Duke might be enough for him to at least consider it.

Has anyone figured out that Coach K bringing in his grandson to walk onto the team is the first step in a succession plan? How could I have missed that?
