Next year's early ranking

I was just on Bart Torvik's site and see that we are projected at 47th next season, but that's WITHOUT Audige, Buie and Beran.

Using the roster tool on Torvik's site, I added Boo, Chase and Robbie back in and our ranking improved to 17th. With Chase and Robbie but no Boo we're 29th.

Still don't know what will happen but if everyone wants to run it back (pending Boo's pro evaluations) I think we'll have higher expectations than even 2018 (other than Clark Kellogg's weird Final Four prediction).

But even if none of the three come back, there's hope that a couple of solid portal additions could get us back in the tournament next year.

Jeff Goodman listed NU as one of five schools who "Just Missed the Cut" for his preseason top 25.

So he probably assumed Boo and Chase are returning. Without them, we would struggle to get into the top half of the B1G, never mind being ranked.

Long way before season starts. Almost 1/3 of colleges players in portal and still growing.

A few freshman have asked out of their letters at other universities.

Plus NU freshman have the entire summer for workouts

Have a little faith

Yes - with only seven recruited players, three being true frosh, we will have games that walkons play double digit minutes. That is a major problem.

Eight. Barnhizer, Berry, Hunger, Martinelli, Nicholson, and the three incoming freshmen. (Plus any of Audige/Beran/Buie that come back, of course.)

Open PF starting spot available on NCAA tourney team. If Chase or Boo return, NU has a decent starting 5 with a stretch 4 added. Martinelli still a rotation player but team needs that add. If both return, should be an easier sell.

That seems seriously predicated on Chase and Boo coming back, otherwise his comment makes no sense. So it's definitely a way too early prediction.
Yes, he thinks they will be back as he mentions in video below.

Okay, it seems very likely that Buie will be back for year 5 and Audige for year 6 (of college).
So we've currently got a rotation of

Center - Nicholson / Hunger
Power Forward - Barnhizer / Martinelli / Hunger
Small Forward - Berry /Barnhizer / Martinelli
Shooting Guard - Audige / Berry
Point Guard - Buie / Clayton / Strauss / Audige

Jordan Clayton had an offer list of NU, Cal and several mid-majors, but none of the strong programs.
Parker Strauss had offers from NU, Wyoming and several mid-majors, but none of the strong programs.

So we are "likely" looking at two primary lineups...

Nicholson / Barnhizer / Berry / Audige / Buie

and

Nicholson / Martinelli / Barnhizer / Audige / Buie

If Luke Hunger is healthy and plays up to (my) expectations, that helps a lot in the frontcourt.
Add a transfer player or two for depth and we're good to go.

Like to see what they look like at the end of the summer, hopefully shots are better and the players are using their legs and more arc.

Hungar has to stay healthy and prove he can defend. Martenelli passed him last year when both where healthy.

Brooks should be one of the most improved players in college ball

MN should make a other leap.

Clayton had an offer from. FGU. Coach is the former Penn St coach, URI who has Archie Miller who was at Indiana and UMASS who has Martin, took his team to final 4 with a 3 guard rotation. Hopefully they saw something in him.

Barkley has a decent shot, can defend and plays hard.

Clayton and Barkely have to adjust to the speed

I think its safe to say that Barnhizer passed Beran and...
Martinelli nearly caught up to Beran, which, for a freshman who wasn't playing for half the season, is quite remarkable.

I don't think Martinelli passed Hunger before Hunger got hurt.

Martinelli and Hunger both played more than 10 minutes in the Pitt debacle on Nov 28. Each showed promise.
Martinelli didn't play again until Jan 23 against Wisconsin.
Hunger played a minute against MSU, two minutes against Prairie View, 8 minutes against DePaul on Dec 17 and 7 minutes against UIC on December 20, before getting hurt in that game.

So while Collins was being very cautious with Martinelli (talk of redshirt) he was trying to get Hunger minutes.

Before the Pitt game there were a few games where Martinelli got off the bench before Hunger. Which surprised me.. One of the games Hunger gave up a layup and fouled a 3 point shooter at the end of the half.

You are correct, the Martenelli did stop playing until injuries occurred. Redshirt???

The most important thing is they all got better and hopefully that is something to look forward to. This summer workout is going to be huge.

Has anyone heard of transfers visiting this month?

It was always the plan for him to redshirt.

My best source says that Brooks and Nick are putting in work and that this will continue. They want to win.

Best shot for a visit could be Justin Mullins, who would have 3 years left. 6'6 guard from Oak Park who played for University Denver (InsideNU has a write up on him as well) or you can pay for the Rock :) .

Looks like a good looking young player with a lot of upside. Jace Carter a possibility as well

I saw Jon Rothstein has us at 20th in his early rankings, and he’s penciling in both Audige and Buie as returnees while acknowledging that they are declared for the NBA draft as of now.

That’s a good sign as Rothstein appears to be somewhat well connected with CCC.
