It's money. The cost to go over there is immense, the tournament doesn't pay the teams anything, and meanwhile the Vegas tournaments are offering huge NIL payouts with identical exposure. Maui might become a thing of the past.
Yep. Welcome to the new America. Where everything must have a profit or it's not worth doing. Sad.

Exactly all about the $$$$$ and NIL $ to boot. Look for more of those kind of tournaments to continue and start up. Anytime a school can get into those tournaments and the team can get let's say 2 million in NIL funds they're going to jump at it and you can't blame them...

Anyone know if they ever did a 30 for 30 on this game? Because it deserves one. Some thought Virginia might go undefeated that year.

It finished up at 3 AM on East Coast on Christmas Eve Morning.

I always thought it was a tournament but it wasn't.

Personally, if I'm going spend the money to go to Hawaii, I'm not tying up two minutes of my time in a gym watching basketball, let alone several hours. I don't blame the schools for not being interested. I have no idea how much their expenses are offset, but sending players, coaches, some support staff like equipment managers/trainers/some administrative staff and cheerleaders to Hawaii for a week is an expensive proposition.
I’m guessing Atlantis takes area of all their expenses there and Nike or other sponsors pay for travel and stuff.

I remember when “the great Alaskan Shootout” was a big deal . Looks like the Maui Classic will follow the same path.
I vividly remember watching Kentucky and Duke playing there one year way back. I don’t know if it was the same year but I remember watching both teams play. I think Duke had Elton Brand and Trajan Langdon.

Seems like that’s where Anderson and Mercer started being called “Batman and Robin “ .

I'm fine with going to these but we already have one stupid play 3 games n 3 days tourney in the sec each season. They aren't preparation for the ncaa due to format and after this year's injury fest I worry about wear and tear playing 3 games n 3 days. I guess if it's once every 4 years go for it.

If I am a AD fully invested in NIL (ahem) then I shop for the best paying Holiday tournament. Otherwise, due to the cost, I say thanks but, no thanks. Yes it's sad but bball is a numbers game now. Especially for programs without mega-donors.
