They want to shorten the length of the game?

LESS COMERCIALS like back in the day?
So take away plays that will change the game is played so that you can have those $100M paychecks.

The first tweet in these posts is repetitive but the second gives extra info.

So it’s going to be like a WWE show:
A three hour show with 40 minutes of matches while the other 2 hours, 20 minutes is in commercial?

They might shorten the overall length of the game by shaving off stopped clock time between plays. But they won't shorten the length of time spent in commercials. That will only ever increase.

Which sucks for me because I hate commercials. I often record games instead of watching them live just so I can go back and watch while skipping the commercial breaks.

Exactly. And watch, after not too long, the overall game time will go back to what it was because they will cram more commercial-time into them. This move to reduce down-time between plays is probably just a prelude to doing that and all the "better TV product" is just a BS cover story.

Or am I being too cynical? 😀

Extracting the four proposals under consideration from @rutgersguy1's post above, I'm ok with getting rid of the clock stoppage after first downs for 56 minutes of the game, but preserving that feature during the last 2 minutes of each half. I like giving teams a little more time in the most dramatic portions of the game, as it's just fun to watch, but I like saving time elsewhere. I like 1 and 2 also, as well as #4, except I'd prefer the clock to stop in the last 2 minutes of each half. And if they really want to shorten games, why not go with a 35 second clock?

1) Prohibiting consecutive timeouts (ie icing kicks)
2) No untimed down at end of 1Q/3Q
3) Clock runs after 1st downs except inside of 2 mins in a half
4) Clocks runs on incompletions once ball is spotted

Ahh, the magical - and arbitrary - 2 MINUTES in American football. Are we going to the goofy 2 minute warning clock stoppage for commercials too?

Haha. I was just thinking why not extend out the 2min to 3 or 4 minutes.

Keep the same rules (clock stops on 1st down) but extend it out to promote excitement and make comebacks a little easier.

How about in the first and 3rd quarters, but not the 2nd and 4th. Same for the incomplete pass change.

Shortens the game, less so when it impacts the game the most...

I'm confused - why would anyone care if the clock stops or not at the end of the 1st/3rd quarters, since play just resumes in the next quarter? It only matters in the 2nd/4th.

I was referring to extending the last 2 minute guidance to the full 2nd and 4th quarters. So clock doesn't stop for first downs and incompletions in Q1 and Q3, but does in Q2 and Q4.

Dislike when sports have different sets of rules for a game depending on the time of the play in a game.

Have always liked CFB better then NFL and don’t like seeing the attempts to make it more NFL like.

Games are typically on Saturdays, there is less concern than a Sunday with the work/school week to prepare for. A declining % attend various church services Sunday mornings, but almost all of those begin later than a workday/class, and taking a nap after is possible.

Why not go back to starting the noon games by 12:01 as opposed to 12:10+? It would help with fitting in the TV window. The starting time delays only get worse for the later window times.

I can remember the first time I noticed the use of TV timeouts thinking they would ruin football....by killing something called momentum. Not that I long for the old, old days when Rutgers games were aired on New Jersey public television.

The way the game is played has changed. No more three yards and a cloud of dust. The passing game with lots of clock stoppage for incomplete passes and first downs makes for too long games. The rules have to change with the times (no pun intended).

If the playoffs weren’t expanding to 12, I’d doubt there would be changes but with expansion to 12 and possibly 16 in the future there were bound to be adjustments.

Either way doesn’t make much of a difference to me as a tv viewer.

So less BTN money?

Can't cheer for a $100m a year to Rutgers Athletics and condemn commercials.
Well, I will say it does get quite tedious sitting in the stands. Touchdown/extra point, commercial, kickoff, commercial, 6 or 7 plays commercial. Sometimes I wonder if it would be worth it to just jump on the field and bum rush the ref holding the commercial clock? I swear sitting in those stands, 3 minutes feels like a lifetime lost.

Gotcha. I like the idea of the last 2 minutes, as that will definitely shorten the game more, but still provide good drama at the end of each half - could consider having it be the last 4 minutes of each half, I guess, but don't see the point in the whole 2/4Q. Just my opinion on it...

Long as we're all wishing for stuff, I wish they'd eliminate all the commercials completely. Commercials and commercial breaks suck.

The schools can sell hookers and blow to fund sports instead. We'd wind up with more fans and they'd all be way happier most of the time, too. Win win.

I love commercials. More thought/work goes into the average commercial than an average entire show. I read that on the internet somewhere, so it must be true. Can't we have commercials with hookers and blow in them, as well as commercials selling hookers and blow for the low low price of three easy payments of $149.99 - but wait, there's more!

Don't forget coming out of the 3 minute media timeout, then the booth signals they want to take another look at the play, so another endless replay timeout...so after the replay they respot the ball, line up, call timeout...

The official in the red shirt - most hated person on the field (unless we're playing PSU, of course)...

Commercials are the devil!

Although, commercials with scantily clad high-priced hookers would be okay. Not the devil!

I hope that you realize that every football game that you watch has an average of about 15 minutes of actual plays occuring. You're arguing over nothing. And the games often take over 3.5 hours. In that sense, football, particularly college football, can be one of the most ponderous games there is, with under 10% of the time alotted for actual action. You're arguing around the edges.

I love running the clock after an incompletion. They need to shorter the games. They're pushing 3:30. They should take notice of the XFL. XFL runs the clock after an incompletion, game still took 2:30-2:45, that's perfect.

Don't see #1 being a huge time waster, especially at end of half or end of game. Guess that every little thing adds up, but #1 seems to be small potatoes.

I hated the NFL changes and if college follows suit I'll hate that as well.

Another angle.. they are going to have to revisit who can be officials then.. they are going to have to be in far better shape as a whole to run down the field and spot the ball in a timely fashion.

All these changes just for "TV". How about removing the TV timeouts and force "TV" to find alternate ways to advertise.. akin to what soccer does.

Great point, although some might not like some of the potential outcomes. For example, in most of Europe, most people watch soccer matches via subscription services that ain't cheap.

Putting quick 10 second ads on split screen after plays could probably work.
Nothing is happening anyway

But can easily see people complaining about it being "too cluttered and busy" on their TV and then a new round of complaining.

Didn't people complain about MLB putting ads on the bases?
Maybe put logos on the player jerseys?

As I said above - people want all the TV money to help the program but not actually deal with the consequences of where that TV money comes from.

Ehhhh.

The one that bugs me is letting the clock run after incompletions. That's kinda dumb.
Next step after that is going to a running clock and adding time on at the end of the halves for injury & stoppage time, a la metric futbol.
