dang that's sloppy looking - I must be overlooking a better way to post links or something

ANYWAY -- I was looking at old NFL videos last night and didn't realize that NFL teams USED TO PLAY COLLEGE ALL STAR TEAMS......how freakin ........BIZARRE...and yet.....awesome

This one is a link to the 1975-76 Super Bowl Champion Steelers (Steel Curtain in its prime) playing an all star college team that featured future all pro's with:

QB- Steve Bartkowski
RB - Walter Peyton
TE - Russ Francis

I think one of the linemen was a big name player too --
(didn't catch the defensive starters for the kids)

I somehow missed that this game was ever played........and I believe the College team scores against Pittsburgh on the first play?

(then the bodies start to drop.......which might be WHY they don't do this anymore)

here's a Wiki link showing the history of the series and who won which game / when
The linked Steeler game was one of the last, if not THE last one ever played
The College players won a few of the games -- (looks like they won 9 games in about 40 years)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_College_All-Star_Game

What do you think the results would be now? Let's assume they play one of the 'final 4' NFL teams from any given season.......
I think the level of violence and hard would be a LOT higher than it was back then
NFL teams would consistently brutalize ANY all star college team -- agreed?

anyway -- check out this moment of strange-football-history
a lot of the games were closer than I'd have expected - regardless of 'era'
the games appear to have been well attended - although dropping somewhat in the early 70's?
1963 Packers were the last team to lose to a team of college all stars

The pros would be bigger faster stronger meaner. The big thing though is that they would have played together and would obviously be a good team.

How many rookies are real standouts?

The more level competition would be the college all stars vs the worst NFL team or maybe a cfl or arena team (actually not sure if those exist still).

at some skill positions they could absolutely hold their own, but at QB, and in the trenches especially it would be a slaughter.

Coaching in some pro sports seems to be more about managing egos but in the NFL it really is miles ahead scheme wise.

If the Bengals played a college team they would lose every time. That's all I know.

Yes. As long as the NFL team was trying at all, it would be no contest. That might be the problem, however. Even the worst player on an NFL roster was pretty much a monster on his respective college team.

I, too, remember college all-star teams playing the SB champion in a pre-season game. I don't remember much about the games but don't believe the pro's ever lost. I don't see such a team beating the pro's.

Gimme Belicek and 2 months to prepare the college All-Stars... BTW: he's allowed to cheat too.

I would have been like 3 or 4 years old when this series was cancelled so I don't recall it at all -- can't believe I'd never heard of it though.....

I DO remember being a kid in the 70's and the networks hyping the PRO BOWL as if it were a REAAAAAAAL RIVALRY........

Yes sir -- those AFC guys stay awake at night HATING NFC guys

Mostly obscure rivalries like LIONS-CHARGERS though

........I really wanted it to be true

I miss the days of AL and NL baseball teams actually being two completely different leagues who would only step on the field during the World Series or All Star Game. Now they play each other like every couple of weeks and are all good buddies. EFFFFFFFF that.

Wouldn't this be a college all star team vs. an older college all star team that had trained together, practiced together, ran the same system, etc, etc.
