Not to mention the favoritism the Patriots got on replay calls. If there is no obvious evidence, you stay with the call on the field.. unless you’re Tom Brady and the Pats. I like the Patriots but they don’t need any advantages.

Terrible calls abounded yesterday - both ways. Without that bogus sideline interference call and the no call on the pick play that got the Chiefs to the one - there isn’t any OT.

The “two best teams” is an opinion-based assessment. If one bases a championship on actual performance, the two teams in the super bowl won the games they needed to win, according to objective criteria known to all before the season started. There were no “committees”, no resumes, no “eye test”, just teams doing what they needed to do to win games. The nature of football is that, unlike basketball, seven game series are impractical. In football, you’ve got one shot.
I prefer the objective determination to a subjective opinion. I believe it is more fair and accurate. BTW, New Orleans had plenty of chances to win that game so that it didn’t come down to what was admittedly one of the worst no-calls I’ve ever seen. The Chiefs could have actually stopped the Patriots in OT, including having them in three consecutive 3rd and long situations, only to give up the conversion. They have no complaints.

Bad calls abounded. The no-call on blatant PI and the phantom roughing the passer call on the Chiefs being the most obvious. It was an embarrassment for NFL officials. Players on the two losing teams deserved better.

However, how many times is it driven into everyone that YOU NEVER LEAVE THE GAME IN THE HANDS OF THE OFFICIALS? Emphasis intended.

Shannon Sharpe had a great take on NFL Network last night with which I agree. Sometimes coaches get too cute with their playcalling. What were the Saints doing passing the ball when they could have run and basically ran the clock down to about 10 seconds, take the chip shot FG and be out the door with a win? What were the Patriots doing passing the ball on 3rd and goal from the 1? As a Patriot's fan, I was cursing what I saw and felt that karma had come full circle from the Malcolm Butler interception.

A great day of NFL football, but not a great day for NFL football. jmo

Both were bad calls, but neither bad call determined the outcome of the game. I didn’t see the PI call, but I did watch OT of the Saints/Rams. Saints had chances to win after the call. KC actually had another possession after the phantom roughing the passer call.

NFL trumps College in every way.

There is NO selecting playoff teams.
Before it was selecting the "best two" in the BcS.

Its simple. Win your conference, you play for the Title.

Officiating is just as bad in college, if not worse.

The pick play is like the moving screen in basketball. It happens a lot and it’s not a reviewable play. Overturning the call on an obvious change of possession directly affected the outcome of the game.

Without pick plays, NE doesnt have 5 Titles or most of their AFC Title games.
Couple that with they hardly get called for offensive holding.

The Patriots were and are ripe for the picking. The roughing the passer against Brady was priceless. What a tool. I’m wishing someone cleans his clock once and for all. But Beantown is correct the Chiefs had their chances and had their player not lined up wrong at 1:46 mark they would have had the interception and the game. And the Chiefs defense couldn’t stop a toddler.

The NFL playoff system is a joke it is nothing more than a coin toss. It’s akin to the ability to tie in the regular season. Ridiculous.

There is no question that the Roughing the passer penalty against the Cheifs was a terrible call. And they have been far too quick with the flag this season. One good thing about the NFL is that they do a good job of reviewing what works and what is excessive in the offseason. I expect they will dial back the frequency of RTP calls heading in to next season.

I hate to think that they are going to have to “go to the replay cameras” to determine whether a penalty needs to be assessed. But that call was terrible and the replay would have solved the issue. Also with the no call on the PI and potential head to head. Awful is not a proper description. Plus the NFL OT rules suck. I do like the college model but the NFL needs to start their OTs at the 50 yard line.

Both were great games

The no call on the PI definitely kept the Saints from winning in regulation. If the PI is called, the Saints have a first down. They run the ball 2 times, running out the clock and forcing the Rams to use their last timeout. With 5 seconds left, they then kick the chip shot field goal for the win.

Yes, the Saints could have screwed that up ... it’s happened before. Bridgewater’s Vikings screwed up exactly that way a few years ago when the kicker missed the chip shot field goal. But the Saints win was at least 95% certain if the PI is called.

The nfl got what they wanted with a team from Los Angeles in the super bowl. They really want the LA market to jump on board.
