Nike needs to get back on their ACG ****, imo. Outdoors are all the rage right now.

Is golf not as popular as its ever been now? Thought the sport was just as popular as ever, surprised by this.

Professional golf is doing well because of all the young talent.

Golf's participation level has gone down (especially with Millennials). A lot of it was due to the economy downturn, but the younger folks just do not get out as much as previous generations. Attention spans are much shorter and folks want to do things fast and easy. Golf is not a quick game. A lot of courses struggle with pace of play. Its expensive to play and equipment is too expensive as well.

During the Tiger surge, too many courses were built and could not be maintained especially when the economy tanked. Manufacturer wise, IMO, there are too many manufacturing companies and those like Taylormade created too many lines of equipment with very quick release dates. Go to Dicks and you will see tons of TM equipment on the shelves that cannot sell. They released a new line every month (seemed like it) and it eventually caught up with them.

JMO, Golf will do better with less courses, more manageable prices to play and adequate control on pace of play. Manufacturers would do better if a few left the market (such as Nike and a few others) and allow released lines to stay on the market much longer before the next release. Nothing like buying a $500 TM driver only for a new model to come out a few months later. That all said, need just enough competition to keep prices manageable and not allow 2-3 manufacturers make all the equipment and jack their prices up even more than they are now.

This absolutely socks for me. I've used Nike equipment forever. They got into golf and signed Tiger and made a ton of money. They aren't making much on golf equipment and decide to get out. The biggest, deepest pocketed producer of clubs and they bail. Weak sauce. I guess not making the huge margins they are accustomed too pushed them out. It's pathetic. They have tons of diehard Nike golf fans and just abandon everyone. Thanks for all the money we took from you, see ya.

I'm gonna ditch all my Nike gear and never buy anything Nike again. They clearly just used golf to make money on Tigers popularity and now that he is out, they are too. I will never buy a Nike article of clothing, shoe or anything else ever again!! Screw you Nike!!

Golf takes forever to play, you pretty much have to set aside at least a whole afternoon to play it.

Golf is boring.

Golf is expensive. Clubs, club bag, shoes, balls, etc. Unless you have your own private golf course or just want to hit around some balls in your yard, you have to pay every single time you want to play.

It's inconvenient. It's not like with basketball you can just put up a hoop in your driveway or go to a neighborhood playground and play for free. You have to pack up all your **** and drive out to a golf course and then pay to play.

That doesn't appeal to a lot of people and appeals less and less with younger audiences.

Golf is too expensive. End of story. It's a great game but I just can't afford to play enough to be any good at it so I quit the game.

Seems kind of harsh Stu, but I do agree, F Nike for trying to earn some cash on the back of a sports icon.

Can't believe a publicly held company makes decisions based on profits. Next thing you know somebody will tell me that kids like candy and women like jewelry.

And people get pissed about it! LOL.

I'm sure their stockholders are happy. Anyone checked on Nike stock today? Wonder how the DJ reacted.

I hate to see Nike go because I like some of their stuff. Love my irons. Will definitely be looking for some discounted stuff when it goes on sale.

I think golf has several problems, many of which has been mentioned here already. One that hasn't is pace of play. There needs to be a better balance between playing slow and playing fast. I think golf is much more enjoyable at a pace around 14 to 17 minutes a hole. I want to relax and enjoy the time with the people I am playing with. Some clubs now want you to be on the pace of 12 minutes a hole. To me, there is no enjoyment at that pace. I feel rushed and I also feel like I don't have time to talk and laugh with the people I'm playing with because I have to be thinking about getting to my ball as quickly as possible and hitting the next shot. It just really makes it not worth the effort, and I really enjoying playing, especially with my kids.

A little bit surprised by this but Nike has been slicing and dicing. They got rid of their involvement in surfing as well. That's not as popular as golf but it shows they are limiting themselves to just the three major sports now.

Smartphones and technology in general have played a part as well , people just aren't as active as they used to be . Video games played a big part in reducing outdoor play and obesity .

Yup heard on "The Herd" today that Nike and Adidas are getting out of the golf business as well as Dick's Sporting Goods laying off hundreds of people in their golf departments.

I love golf but it takes time AND money, and I've never been at a point in my life where I have both. When I was younger I had all the time in the world but I was always broke. Now I'm older and I'm (slightly) better off financially, but with work and family I never have time.

Golf isn't dying but it is shrinking back to where the market will allow right now. It's been mentioned already, but there are WAY too many golf courses (and equipment manufacturers) out there for the current demand so it's only natural some will disappear.

Golf as a game will be fine, we're just trimming the fat imo

[laughing] who said anything about crying? I'll f--king use you as target practice if you hold me up, bub. Ever been hit by a golf ball?

Like I've told you, just STFU and go shank another shot.
I think you would very much regret doing that.

You may think that I would, but I know that I wouldn't. In fact, I would enjoy it very much.

It's simple, just STFU and hit your GD ball. How hard is that?

Don't know anything about your game but I'll bet sizable amounts you aren't good enough to aim and hit anyone from that far away. Hell I'd best against most pros pulling it off.

Maybe, maybe not, but I'd have a lot of fun trying.

Besides, it's a numbers game, the more shots I hit at somebody the greater the chance one will connect -- and I've got no problem raining down a shower of Pro V1s on some dickhead clogging the course by relaxing and yukking it up with his idiot friends.

If you are a big enough moron to hit into a group of golfers on a golf course then you shouldn't be playing golf to begin with. Second, I pretty much always play with my kids when I play. Hitting someone with a golf ball can cause very serious injury or even death if it hits them in the wrong place. If you ever hit into my group and put my kids in danger, I can guarantee that you will regret it.

Really? I didn't know that. What place would that be Dr. Einstein?

Look, if your kids play as slowly as you say you play then they deserve to be hit too. Think of it as a hard lesson in basic golf etiquette. It's simple, STFU and hit your GD ball -- or GTFO of my way. This isn't Star Trek three-dimensional chess.

Big baby is balling now. People, and kids, deserve to be hit with golf balls because they are playing at 15 minutes a hole. You have got to be the biggest idiot on this board.

You're watching Glen Davis? What's that got to do with playing golf slowly?

Balling = playing basketball well
Bawling = crying excessively

Now what were you saying about "the biggest idiot on the board "?

Don't play slowly, you won't get hit -- i.e. STFU and hit your GD ball. It really is just that simple.

I gotta side with dig on this one. If a group behind you is playing faster than you, and you don't offer to let them play through, you deserve being pegged. I have let groups play through when mine has been slow, and have been given a wave through when golfing faster that a group. No shame in it, and most people consider it good course etiquette.

Why should you get to golf at your pace, and f*** the people behind you at playing at their's? If they are faster than you, more often than not, they are better than you, and you are f***ing their round up. So who's the real prick in the situation?

Keep crying big baby. Your tears only make me laugh. 15 minutes per hole isn't slow. There is no excuse in trying to hit someone with a golf ball no matter how slow they play. The fact that you don't know this says more about how big of an idiot you are than all your crying combined.

Where did I say I wouldn't let someone playing faster than me to play through? You are jumping to a conclusion there. I always let people play through if we are playing slower than they are. I expect the same when we are waiting as well. But nobody deserves to pegged. You are asking for a law suit or worse if you hit someone intentionally.

Are suits of law made from cloth like regular suits? I don't know which is worse, your admitted slow play, your whining defense of it, or your savage butchery of the English language.

I play once a week atleast...there's so many courses around Lexington tho I don't see how all of them can do well. I've never understood people that buy new clubs every year...it's you, not the club. I've had the same TM Rbz set and they work fine. And You can play 18 almost anywhere from 16 to 24 dollars using golfnow.

I do hate playing behind people who think its the tour...just hit the damn ball. Oh your an extra yard out and want to hit first...sorry, ready golf for the win.

Keep whining baby. You can't defend your idiotic comments, so you deflect. Maybe after someone runs over you a few times with their cart after you hit their kid with a golf ball you will rethink your attitude.
