No ESPN or SEC Network on Dish. Dish has lost

Crap like this is why I never considered Dish Network. They are always dropping/blacking out channels for weeks or months at a time. Ever since I started paying my own bills years ago, I was always a DirecTV person but I just recently dropped them for YouTube TV. If I decide that streaming isn’t for me, I’ll go back to DTV in a heartbeat.

All of the tv providers do these stunts. It wasn't too long ago Direct TV lost some of its programming due to a contract dispute.

I've got Sling and Im in the same boat. What a crock of BS! what's the work around?

ESPN/Disney chose to pull those channels on football Saturday, so I'd say if anyone's pulling a stunt it's ESPN.

They want you to drop Sling this weekend so Sling will cave into paying them more to carry their channels.

The only work around is to subscribe to another streaming provider like Youtube TV that still has those channels, which is exactly the point of Disney's move in this contract negotiation ("nice sports package you have there, shame if anything were to happen to it").

Couldn't pick a worse time of year for a greedy dispute. I imagine Dish and Disney are catching hell right now at customer service.

I find it funny that Disney is advertising this on ESPN pretending to target Dish and Sling customers that can't even see the ads because they don't have the channels. Definitely trying to tank Dish.

Dish will be gone in 5 years. Disney will still be here, but will likely have Satan as their CEO.

From one point of view, it's the perfect time. Interrupt college football and it moves the needle. Do this in early August? Not sure you'd get the same reaction.

There are plenty of 7 day free trials from other providers. That's what I did last time this happened on yttv.

True. But the timing is terrible for people expecting to watch today's games. It most certainly comes at a time that will "move the needle" and I'm sure that was a part of Disney's intentions.

All the games are you Tube. Screw Dish. I have had them for 21 years. They pull this crap every football season. They did it last year for CBS.

Diz/ESPN has a virtual monopoly on college football.

There needs to be an anti-trust lawsuit that seeks to spin off the SEC netowrk from ESPN and preclude exclusive contracts between services.

These are mostly state funded schools and it would be nice to see SEC states drive this boat.

It would be nice to have each state require home games be on OTA broadcasts so that the taxpayers get to see the games minus the Disney extortion fees.

Also,if possible require the SEC network be offered a la carte with a pricing restriction within 5% of the rate the carriers offer it. So if its a $10 add on to a service a customer could get it for 10.50 as a stand alone. If there is a monopoly it will need to be controlled or it will get out of control.

If I had the choice I would only sub to the SEC network for football and the $25/mo philo so the rest of the family can binge Food Network.

I am watching more of the free OTA stuff than anything else.

The governors, AGs and legislatures of each SEC state would have to work together to make all of this happen.

BTW COINCIDENTALLY Disney owned HULU + Live is offering 3 months for ~$50 if you get in before Oct 5th.

Switch providers if you want ESPN, but don't complain the next time your rates go up. That's how this works.

It would be interesting to see Dish or DTV carve out all the ESPN channels as a separate add-on package (instead of lumping them in with other non-sports channels) so people could see just what percentage of their monthly TV bill is dictated by the Disney sports channels.

Diz requires them to carry all of their channels on whatever tier is offered.

Diz is at least 40% of the bill.

Diz more than any other content provider drives the rates and ESPN is the property that is used for the leverage so it should be no surprise that contracts are set to expire in the middle of FB season. The House of Mouse is a bunch of woke, greedy thugs.

My Diz + expires Nov 11. I had the original 3 year deal. I will not be renewing.

S-pun and it's subsidiaries are the largest single pricing component for all providers who have their content compared to any other channels. TBS, USA, major networks, etc. Any of them.

The sub-fees the providers pay ESPN are negotiated for one or more years. Sub-fee pricing is based on "reach". How many subscribers does each provider have at the time of negotiations. When things go south in negotiations then you get the
situation we're talking about in this thread. Disney doesn't want to lose the revenue Dish/Sling generates, but they want what they want.

This has happened over and over. Eventually the two parties reach some agreement. Neither wants to lose viewers.

The notion of an a la carte package containing ESPN product is unlikely. The cost per subscriber would actually be much higher because as big as it is it may fall short on the monthly revenue stream the House of Mouse needs. ESPN starts each year with billions of dollars owed to the leagues they carry and must pay.

Something like this happened with one of the carriers a couple years ago. It was resolved within a week.

It was either cave or lose millions of subscribers. Honestly, if everyone had high speed interwebs, Dish would be finished. We cut the cord because they were always fighting with CBS.

We The People control all of this but it takes being without to get what you want. Do you think YouTubeTV or any provider would reduce their rates if 50% of people canceled? You betcha!

Depends on the fees (ransom) the providers charge the carriers.
