No handshake

I kinda get the whole “what does it matter” I also kind think…shake their f’ing hands, it’s not their fault your pissed that they didn’t just roll over cause they were wrestling in the Mecca. Brands talk about attacking and moving…half the team (or less) doesn’t even come close to any of that..we lose more matches than we win in a match decided by less that 2 points. Other than PK and Cass can anybody 174 to 197 actually chain wrestle, like string moves together in and effort to score points? I have my doubts. I feel other team know that and then when we roll out 133 and 141 back ups:..hawks are asking and maybe that’s what Brands wants to lose at home. Yes I know that’s dumb.
I also heard that the team has been hammered with the flu…but that also seems as if it’s a yearly thing with this team, if not flu, it’s a team cold, mono, etc. we are either the worse snaked bit team in America or they are not what we grew up watching and we make excuses for what we remember them being when we were younger as to why they a very good team but probably a 3rd or 4th place team at nationals (at best)

I am not sure if it matters. I sat right behind score table and the whole Illinois team was lined up ready to shake hands and Iowa wrestlers just walk back to tunnel. I felt at the time this is a bad look on Iowa and this team.
Lol, it doesn’t. They shake before and after the match
They typically only have 1 attack and move wrestler every season… every weight coached by Morningstar is a defensive wrestler that wrestles like he’s being coached by Ferentz, build a 1 point lead and protect it… plus they always look f’ing tired by the time they get to the heavy part of big 10 schedule… it’s definitely different watching them now compared to the 80’s when I was growing up
Brands said on the radio after Purdue meet that they dont shake hands anymore bc everyone wants to fight them.
You will get varying responses to this - but - The schools are always promoting good sportsmanship and fair play. A hand shake is important because it lets your competitor know that we are still humans, people, and respective of one another. All sports aside, they respect each other.... Now, with that being said, they do the line ups and hand shakes before the meet begins so I am not sure the after-meet handshake is essential..
I hope that’s not true, because that sounds ridiculous. A team not shaking hands at the end will not last. Nor should it.
Well they shook hands Friday night, so I guess the Nitts didn't want to fight them.
Your post was good until the final part trying to justify. To my knowledge, we are the only team choosing to take this stance. Shaking hands is done at the college level by all sports and by all teams- other than one.
I don't feel I was trying to justify one way or the other. You just took it that way.... I just don't understand why those who think skipping the post-meet hand-shake line is that big of a show of disrespect... Technically the wrestlers are shaking hands during pre-meet lineups. Most shake again right at the begining of the match when they get down into their stance before the whistle blows and then shake again at the end of the match. Some even go over and shake the opposing coaches hand at that time... By that point many have already shaken hands 2 or 3 times... Seems like a good amount of respect and sportsmanship to me... It does not matter to me when the athlets shake hands, just so long as it gets done which it does multiple times.. Iowa shows a ton of respect and class to their opponents
Bottom line, shaking hands at the end of a sporting event is a ritual and always has been. It represents good sportsmanship of the event the athletes competed in against one another. They don't shake hands at the end for the fans-- it' a respect thing athlete to athlete. And if there was no point in the post meet/game hand shake then why has it been done for decades and decades? Our wrestling thinks it doesn't matter. If another team snubbed us, people here would see it as disrespect. Sorry, I have loved Iowa wrestling for many years and a season ticket holder now for over 30, but this decision IMO is more of arrogance than anything.

I don't disagree with you Frydaze.... I too have been a long time season ticket holder and I too love Iowa wrestling. Have since I was a kid. I am almost 50 now so I have seen and experienced a lot of Hawkeye wrestling in my days... I agree with every thing you said about sportmanship and athlete respect. They don't need to do away with it permanently, but sometimes (like the Illinois dual or some of the Nebraska duals) when tensions and tempers are high the coach has to think about the safety of his wrestlers. If there is a chance a fight could break out I have zero problems with them skipping the post-meet handshake.. Coaches call - Just gotta trust Tom Brands on it I suppose..
Yea, if there's a situation with a team or an ongoing tension with a team then I can understand for a time being. I just don't like seeing it across the board with every team/every meet. And I hope it can get permanently rectified at some point also because on this issue, I hate for IOWA to be the one common denominator.
First time I saw an opponent refuse to shake hands with an Iowa team was after the Hawkeyes shut out Virginia Tech in a wrestling dual. Of course, that Virginia Tech team was coached by Tom Brands (and Wes Hand and at least one other former Hawkeye).
When the meet is over it’s time to put hurt feelings aside and place sportsmanship at the forefront. Be a man and shake the hand of your opponent win or lose. Show some class.
This is college wrestling not 7th grade softball. Who cares if they don’t shake hands after the dual. Mentioned already, they shake hands at introduction, start of match, and end of match. Name another sport that shakes hands that often. This is a silly discussion.
