Well, they played 'Sweet Caroline' again at the game today, and the entire student section sang along and waved their arms to the music. The students, the overwhelming majority of the fans, and hundreds of dueling piano bars across the nation can't all be wrong.

The song sucks and is yet another ripoff. Please say when it is played so I can duck into the concourse for it. Might as well play every other tired wedding song as well

When I was a DJ for weddings and such, I had to play a lot of songs I despised simply because they filled the dance floor. If Sweet Caroline works, I guess I can grin and bear it. I have a lot of practice.

So they did it with about 5 minutes left in the Rutgers game, almost as an afterthought (seemed like a shorter clip of the song, and quickly ended when football play resumed), and nobody in the stadium outside the front half of the student section (the cool kids in the back refused) were doing it.

Good. Hopefully by the end of the season we can quietly retire it and nobody ever speaks of it again.

OMG, what an idiotic thing to complain about.
Irony!

Millen loved it.

I agree completely with the idea of banishing Sweet Caroline.
The best in stadium sing along I have seen in person is the rendition of Shout from Animal House done at evey Oregon home game. The movie used Eugene locations, and they show a clip that edits in current Oregon players and other students (and mascot) clad in togas. There is near total stadium participation. It is a great song with a particular site association done well.

Yeah I was relieved that it wasn't the full rendition, like between the third and 4th quarter. That little one verse thing was sort of harmless. I expected worse. Also - no "put your hands up in the air". When nerds try to be cool, you generally look stupid. Speaking of - last thing we want to do is be like Matt Millen.

I didn't mind Sweet Caroline. I was sitting in section 110 and can tell you that every single student was singing along. And there were a lot of them and they were having fun.

We need to do everything we can to make the game day fun for students so that even more of them come to the game.

One other thing I noticed was how many purple clad people were out in Evanston but had absolutely no intention of going to the stadium for the game.

Put a good product on the field and there are a lot of people already dressed to go inside and watch

The students will generally go along with anything because that's their job. The fact that I saw many students in the upper seats were not going along with "Sweet Caroline" is pretty telling to me.

We have some things that are cheesy but are ours ("Hey what? Go Wildcats!") and the students go all in.

There are many of us, and I'm sure there are students among us, who resent being dragged kicking and screaming through the "Sweet Caroline" muck.

Sweet Caroline is a cancer that must be eradicated. It is a Red Sox song sung by Neil Diamond about Caroline Kennedy. Shoot me now! How about Knock on Wood by Ami Stewart. or Disco Inferno by the Tramps. On play reviews play Instant Replay by Dan Hartman. Okay, Okay my disco roots are coming out but anything is better than Sweet Caroline. The thought of Neil Diamond with his crappy combover, sequined shirt and dropped belly is enough to make one vomit!

NU Wildside needs to pick a song and stick with it. Purple Rain, Purple Haze, doesn’t really matter all that much, just pick one and make it ours.

I tried listening but had to turn off SWP. Ugh.

How about this one? I shared it on the Rock, and certain folks were dubious about it. But what else could unite Wildcat fans - and throw our opponents off their game - like a large purple dinosaur leading us all in hugs of our neighbors, and inspiring a new young wave of fans to wear purple?

Sweet Caroline not going anywhere. Nor are Gatorade buckets or the 500 other shlocky trends in today's society. Every shtick is new to someone and as long as there's one person who thinks it's new and fresh and wants in, the shtick will stick

Well I guess there is hope for some. It is not as if "Who Let the Dogs Out" didn't go anywhere.

Another idea: why not make a “Who let the Cats out” version of that song?

Basically the same song, except it goes “WHOOOO LET THE CATS OUT (roar, roar, roar, roar)”.

I think that could also work and be a hit. Everybody loves that song, let’s put a Wildcat twist on it.

It’s October, which means it’s time for Christmas music, which means they should perhaps consider Jingle Cats.

Sure it’s not cool, but you’re telling me waving to the children’s hospital is cool?

Go (jingle) Cats!

Jingle Cats will get the crowd feisty! I like it more than jingling our keys.

So, they did it during the "fan cam" segment. All the Iowa fans around me stood up and belted it out with great mirth, because they recognize that song and they know the words they're supposed to sing at the time they're supposed to sing them, and they wanted everybody to know that they knew.

I STILL don't understand if Alabama has no shame playing Sweet Home Alabama, why can't Chicago's big ten team play Sweet Home Chicago - Blues Brothers version?

If we want to be "hipper" play something that is not Wisconsin's House of Pain "Jiump Around" song but something very similar and from the same era - Cypress Hill "Insane In The Brain"? There is ongoing controversy about plagiarism and these two songs involving the producer....

But it would be funny to tick the Badgers off while shrugging it off and just saying, hmm, different song as far as we are concerned.

“Sweet Home Chicago” is not that good of a song. Plus Sinatra was just trying to make some easy money off of a town he knew nothing about. NYC and northern NJ were his true base.

“Lake Shore Drive” IS. No need to know the lyrics. Just use it to get some good Chicago vibes going!

I think you’ve got the wrong song in your head. That happens to me all the time. It isn’t a Sinatra song. It’s a Chicago blues song. The real deal! I guess the most famous version is done by The Blues Brothers.

I like Sweet Caroline just fine. But when they played it on Saturday night, Iowa fans lit up as though we were playing it as a courteous host to make them feel at home. It was frustrating to watch.

Honestly...this is what I'd like to see - us adopt easy crowd pleasers that aren't necessarily already synonymous with other Big Ten programs...like Shout at Purdue...Jump Around at Camp Randall, etc.

Chelsea Dagger is perfect - very "Chicago" and would be great to condition our home fans to expect it at very specific, certain points of the gameday experience. Would of course add Sweet Home Chicago to that (which I don't expect to hear in Columbus or Ann Arbor), Purple Haze seems like an obvious selection (like maybe right before each kickoff?)...maybe Don't Stop Believin' any time we score but are still behind...this isn't rocket science.

The fan experience is a joke and is devoid of any authentic tradition or sense of pageantry. Play Kanye or Common or Chance (we are chicago right?) Or even the band, Chicago??
-OR-
Steal a free timeout with pre-planned protests every home game. Those "Meet with the Board NOW" protests could be "our" thing and then invite the visitors fans to run out and take it down.

How about something with pure positive energy?

“Gonna make you Sweat” by C+C Music Factory comes to mind. Can @CoralSpringsCat get on board?
Love that - honestly, anything that's easy for the crowd to get behind that we send up directly with certain plays or occurrences in the game...that the announcer and the gameday ops people don't actually cram down our throats (like Hands Up in the Air...) *and that 125 other FBS programs aren't already using.

FYI, there is indeed a student section scoreboard race prior to Jump Around at Camp Randall. The crowd also sings "Build Me Up Buttercup" a capella at some point. Your call as to which is better between that and "Sweet Caroline".
