No QB + bad front 7 = mediocre team

Stephen Johnson is a good competitor, but he just isn't even close to being accurate enough to make this offense truly lethal. It's a shame, too, because this is the first time in awhile that Kentucky has had a near dominant run blocking offensive line to go along with a stable of good running backs. While our receivers aren't great I think they're good enough to make our offense deadly if we had a QB that could deliver the ball consistently. Unless Johnson improves significantly in the offseason, we better hope that Hoak/Clark can play (I don't think Barker is coming back from his injury anytime soon). Turnovers also have to be cleaned up.

Our front 7 was a concern coming into the year, and the way they started the year did not to alleviate that concern. They did perform better in the middle of the season (partially due to poor competition), but now they've returned to playing like garbage. Outside of Jones we have no LB that seems to do well against the run consistently, and Middleton is the our only lineman that even has the potential to make an explosive play. Kentucky needs Kash to come along at MLB and Kengera Daniel/TJ Carter to develop on the D-line if we're going to improve next year. I have no idea what UK can do about the nose tackle spot, but I don't think Pringle is the answer there.

Johnson is definitely not great at passing, but from where I'm sitting, our tackles are still horrendous at pass blocking.

Just like it was with Towles and Barker, when our qb drops back to pass, there's a pretty good chance he's going to get lit up ~2 seconds after the ball is snapped.

I saw at least 4 perfectly thrown balls dropped.

DL has been brutal all year and easily the worst unit. Maybe they'll have a good game against Austin Peay?

Don't disagree with you there, but there have been way too many that have sailed over an open receiver's head. How many times this year have we seen Conrad be overthrown after being wide open, for example?

Not trying to hate on Johnson(he is, after all, a backup QB who has led us to a bowl game and he deserves some credit for that), but I don't think his skillset is going to let us take the next step unless he improves in the offseason.

Couch missed receivers. If they would just catch the ones that hit them in the hands, we wouldn't have to complain about the ones that are overthrown.

You're right re SJ. He's in an almost impossible situation but it is what it is. Still would be nice if the WRs, who were thought to be good, would help and it'd help if he were more accurate.

But my god, DL play is just horrendous. The last 2 games they've been *****-slapped on the ground and get no pass rush. Got to get better production.

Middleton got slapped around today.

Absolutely man handled all day.

1. Johnson has his flaws...but we're scoring more than enough points on offense to win more games. His run threat helps our run game as read option is a legit weapon that you can't crash down on Boom/Benny now. He does have spells in games where he can't pass the ball effectively but he isn't like another Morgan Newton/Whitlow back there either.

2. The defensive front 7 is just a total mess and is UK #1 problem by far over QB.
- Agree that Jordan Jones is big time and Middleton has moments...but the rest rest are below par SEC DL. - - Ware/Allen are decent edge pass rushers but struggle mightily vs. run.
- I have no idea what coaches see in Love but he'll play all snaps next year as well.
- Elam needed to be the interior run stuffer to build upon but instead is UK"s biggest bust in years.
- Kenegra has done nothing to show he'll be a legit SEC DE as well.
- We can hope that Pringle/TJ Carter, etc.. can give us a shot in the arm...but it's unlikely.

In the end, Stoops has uplifted talent at UK with exception of DL. These are the exact same kind of talent Joker/Curry/Mumme had when we were awful. Brooks actually had better talent in his era. Stoops has to win more DL recruits or we'll be stuck where we are or slide back a bit to be honest.

UK's DE sacks for the year: Miggins, who also plays DT, ZERO, Kengera Daniel ZERO, Bell 0.5, TJ Carter ZERO. Four primary DEs have produced 0.5 sacks TOTAL for the year. Can we say piss-poor?

Yep, front 7 on D is a total mess. Not sure how much they would've helped, but losing Tubman, Hatcher, and Meant did nothing to help us. We still may not be good with those guys but we definitely wouldn't be worse.

Said it as soon as Barker got hurt, Stoops should have pulled Hoak's redshirt and let him play and get a feel for a few games and then maybe he would have worked himself into a starting role. Johnson aint the answer.

It has admittedly been awhile since I've seen Couch play, but I don't remember him missing receivers this much.

I will submit that my OP was probably a little too forgiving towards them. Juice has been a disaster in the slot this year and Baker still hasn't lived up to his potential.

Yes because Hoak in for Johnson would have held UT to under 49 pts and anemic UGA offense below 27 pts or So Miss below 44 pts or UF below 45 pts or Bama below 34 pts or Miss St below 38 pts, etc.. see a pattern to the losses? (Hint...it isn't QB play that is causing us to lose).

Horrible recruiting missed on dline and linebackers
If Johnson got as much time as Dobbs he would throw for 300 yards on us
Our oline cannot pass block
And dline is atrocious
Back 7 are slow

This is similar to the pass rushing production from our defensive line last year. Not a lot of improvement there, unfortunately.
