They all got fooled by the catcher misjudging it so bad and camping well into foul territory. Somebody has to yell “infield fly, batter’s out if fair” when that goes up. Yes, the guy ended up running circles, but it would have only taken an ordinary effort to catch it, so it should have been called early IMO.

I agree with the poster who said Pollard was maybe the most mad about the ump going out of his way to talk to his 3B coach. You can read his lips say “you talk to me!” just before he’s tossed.

I was watching when that happened. For someone who knows the rule, does the umpire have to call Infield Fly for it to become that or is it automatic? I never saw an umpire (from the limited view we had on TV) signal infield fly, just fair ball.

The ump is supposed to call it but honestly that was wild the catcher was in foul territory then the ball drifted into fair ground and the catcher misjudged it. If the catcher caught the ball it would have made things a lot simpler lol

The infield fly doesn't apply to foul balls no? And that ball started well in foul......I guess the ump could have called it anyway and it's nullified if it lands in foul territory, but as someone said, catch the dang ball....lol.

And moral of the story, and with Forbes a couple weeks ago......head coaches lose their minds if/when an ump talks to someone other than them....and I don't blame them.

Correct on the rule. Still should be called out "infield fly, batter's out if fair." Happens all the time on popups down either line. They messed it up.

Right foul balls are not infield flies it starts as a foul ball then drifts back into fair territory. The umps at this level should be all over it but at the high school level it would have been really wild .

Don’t blame either one of them a bit. Would be nice to one day see a field umpire step in when their counterpart has lost their cool. I get their code of not wanting to show up your partner, but there’s a clear moment in the Pollard video where the field ump had a chance to intervene and get things back on track
