Northwestern game

Before the season began I counted this game as important, since they all are, but not defining, not a “must win” game. But given how our season so far has gone, and given that the psyche of this team is probably fragile right now, I think this game will go a long, long way to determining how the rest of our season plays out. If we lose this game, on our home turf, to a very beatable Northwestern team, we will be 3-3 and heading in the wrong direction with all kinds of doubts swirling in everyone’s mind. The players know we can still win the West. They know we still control our own destiny. But lose this game and the confidence level heads south.

But if we win we will be 4-2 and will have some confidence and momentum restored after last week’s beat down. It will tell the team that, if we can beat Northwestern, who was holding its own against Wisky for most of the game, that we have a shot at winning the rest of our games. Winning this game is pivotal.

So now is not the time for griping. Get behind this team and let’s treat Northwestern to a Memorial stadium atmosphere they won’t long forget.

And I will add this too. This season has not gone as we wanted it too. But I am still jazzed and psyched that Frost is our coach. I am super optimistic for the future.

I am pumped for this game on Saturday. Reading comments from Held and Austin leaves me to believe that we are going to see more power sets and pounding the rock.

I want to see us beat the **** out of Northwestern!

GBR!

I don't think the team needs it nearly as much as the fans do so they can read about a win and STFU about Ohio State and stop acting like the sky is falling because of one blowout.

Mine too!
I like it too because it shows the coaches are willing to work the power game into our speed game, just as Frost said he wanted to do 2 years ago. He said he wanted to combine Oregon’s speed with Husker power.

Oregon speed with real Husker Power........yessssssssss. While I couldn't possibly agree more I hope that Husker Power is the #1 priority (even though that may take awhile). Speed is terrific! But in the Big10, if you're going to stand tall with them the running power game is absolutely essential imo.

Round up the biggest, strongest & most vicious uglies you can coach!

I agree, but we need that speed too. We need both. Without it we are just Wisconsin or Iowa.
Ohio State had both. We need both to be elite

NU is not good enough to beat tOSU, especially when tOSU is hitting on all cylinders and NU is blowing a gasket. If NU give the Badgers and Squawkeyes their best, those games are winnable. But NU has not shown that it is ready to do that.
Agree on the power vs. Duck-ball thing. NU plays most of its games in the B1G, not the PAC. This team needs to be able to run the ball at teams. Against the upper echelon of the league, the money plays only work if a consistent running game can be established. It's nice to hit big plays against the lower half of the league, but not nice to get stoned by teams with salty defenses.
Have been off the board since before the tOSU game. How much existential drama did I miss?

Let's see how Michigan State, Wisconsin and others look against Ohio State.

Clearly, the Buckeyes didn't have much doubt against Indiana and Nebraska on the road.

But, how will the UW-OSU game play out?

Michigan State is next. There offense was awful in Lincoln last year.

Let’s just say you chose an opportune time to miss the board. I’m more of a comedy guy myself, and the drama was a little too much.

Sounds like we need the smashmouthbspread rather than the spread option. UM went that route at Ohio State for a reason but at the end of the day you still have to block well..

Haha....oh boy, I couldn't possibly agree more. Really!

Without vicious, animal line-play on both sides of the ball we're in deep doo-doo vs the big boys of the Big10. Just like now we've got some excellent young skill players that are lightning fast. They're great! But without the real-deal big uglies we're average at best.

Glad to have you back compadre'! Hope things are going your way......

Smashmouth spread is pretty much Osborne’s offense.

I read on here now and then that you can’t run that offense anymore. Why not? If anyone could reinstall a version of Osborne’s offense again it would be Frost. I would like to see a version of it brought back and I think it could be done. In fact, I think it is what Frost is trying to do.

Well we don't have Tom calling the plays for one and we don't have Tom's O lines yet either. I don't care what offense we run, if we don't block well it isn't going to work.

No, we do not yet have the line. But that is something you build to. But I think power formations have easier blocking schemes. I don’t think our issues up front are a lack of strength. It is experience, line calls, and technique. Austin said today that the smashmouth stuff allows his guys to basically just fire out. He said they loved it and wanted more.
So to me it seems it’s the speed-spread that we don’t have the line for.

Auburn runs it, Georgia has implemented some smashmouth spread and Chad Morris has been running it at Clemson. Those 3 teams are very successful with it so it’s definitely viable. It’s not quite what TO ran but it’s definitely a mix of old and new.

Yes. You definitely want to pass more than Osborne did, so it wouldn’t be identical.

Ha. Well that was easy! Just go and read the comments made by various coaches after practice... not sure if it was yesterday or today. Sure as Hell seemed to me that Austin was kind of psyched for it too.

Good stuff, Yes I agree this is very important game. I mentioned in another post this feels like a turning point game or off the rails game. Win and think we can finish with 8 wins, and get a decent bowl. Lose and I feel things fall apart and we will be lucky to get to 6 wins. Also we saw after last week more people starting to question Frost and if he will be able to accomplish what we all hope he can. We lose this game and that noise gets even louder. My fear is if we lose to NW and the wheels do come off that those making the noise will really be putting heat on something that isn't warranted yet.
I agree with some and I feel we should be seeing a bit better progress than what we have, but it isn't even close to the point where we talk of getting rid of Frost. I hope that chatter is such a small minority that they don't matter. We have to give him at min 5 years no matter what the W-L says.

Oh yeah, I'm easily entertained. :D But seriously, that info from you is simply superb news. I hope some day I can buy you a beer and then go watch NU run over people like a Mercedes Benz over a paper-clip.

Haha....why not, we deserve it!

Just reread Austin’s comments. It was from today. The actual words he used, in reference to the blocking for power sets, was that it was more of a “pin your ears back” and just fire out approach. He also said it is something they have been working on since Spring. Hmmm... sure sounds to me like they are serious about this.

Well, Nebraska was a few plays going their way against cu, that could have (not should have) made the season 4-1 had they managed another td. When this team starts to shut down the turnovers, plays better on defense and special teams, wins will start to accumulate again. And I’m including the staff in that mix of suggestions as well! :D

I think we will see three things. Obviously, our base offense with the spread/read option stuff. Then I think we see two “power” formations... the basic I Formation and the double wing with a lone fullback formation.

Oh yeah!! I sure hope so..."really" hope so.....I won't miss that game for all the tea in China.

I agree. That CU game could have gone our way. If we had a kicker it probably would have.
Turnovers can be fixed. The defense is doing better than last year. Get our kicker back...

That blowout was worse than 2016 since we didn't have our starting QB for 3 quarters and I would argue 2017 since we had more yards.
