A rare Sanjay Lumpkin 3 followed by a couple Olah scores gives Northwestern a 28-27 lead three minutes into the half

Tre Demps scores his first field goal of the game on an and-one layup but misses the free throw (NU is 1-for-5 as a team), then Scottie Lindsey hits back-to-back 3s to give Northwestern a 38-35 lead.

46-42 Illinois with 8:11 to go. After scoring four points in the paint in the first half, Illinois already has 10 in the second

Just like that, back-to-back 3s from Tre Demps puts Northwestern ahead 48-46, leading to an Illinois timeout with 7:02 remaining

What a wild sequence. Scottie Lindsey records a huge block leading to a Tre Demps fast-break layup, then Kendrick Nunn knocks down a 3 to trim Northwestern's lead to 2

Tre Demps missed a 3 to ice the game, then Malcolm Hill failed to get a shot off against strong defense from Sanjay Lumpkin as Northwestern hangs on to win 58-56

HOW ABOUT ALL OF THE SHOTS HE MISSED, THE FOULS HE COMMITTED,ETC,ETC,ET

Eh, he won the game for us at the end, Absolute lock down defense giving the best player on the Illini zero chance to score.

Collins knowledge of his players>>>>>>>>>>>>>Willycat's knowledge of his players.

The illini guy fell on his face. I'll take Falzone , simply because he can score. Then you might have not needed the stumble at the end.

OH,OK. How many points and assits did he have?

Quit being an idiot. Lumpkin helped sealed the win at the end, no doubt about that.

By the way, Lumpkin made more 3-pointers and had more total points than Falzone tonight.

And Lumpkin was the primary defender on the BIG second leading scorer, Malcolm Hill, who was held to 7 points.

OK, you guys have me convinced that Lunpkin is the best thing to happen to NU since sliced bread. Yes, he and the rest of his teammates held their leading scorer down and yes, he was standing in front of the illini guy when he fell down but he had all of 3 points, and 2 rebounds. Still you will never convince me that he is a better player then Falzone and when Rap comes aboard Lumpkin's minutes will fall.

C'mon man.

Everybody knows Sanjay has serious offense limitations in Collins system. No need to beat that dead horse.

Lumpkin gives you strong defense and a decent rebounding presence. In a game where NU wasn't consistently making shots, it's not a terrible idea to keep playing one of your best and (and experienced) defenders while you wait for someone like Tre to get hot.

Some nights you simply can't get the ball through the hoop. You can, however, control how much energy you bring to the defensive end. The way this game was playing out, keeping Sanjay on the floor in the 2nd half was a smart move by Collins.

Side note: Anyone think Falzone might be hitting the freshman wall right about now?

Guess a player like Lumpkin has a place on the current roster but still he had only 2 rebounds in 21 min of play and Falzone had 4 in less then half that time. Yes, he helps on the defensive end when he's not in foul trouble but that's about it.

He hit the Freshman wall about 5 games ago, Minnesota game notwithstanding.
