Not good... a leaky roof

Tonight’s Blue vs White scrimmage was cancelled after 3 points because Carmichael’s roof was leaking.

What's up with the roofs of our hoops arenas, other than both buildings are old?

I agree but the problem will be where is the money coming from to build a new arena. This top brass has more interest in building a new basketball arena as well as improving Kenan Stadium. They need to put money in building a new roof for both buildings IMO.

It has been stated already that WBB would play in the same new arena as the men. Now I could see some issues with that but apparently that’s what CB wants.

The top priority right now is to get the roof repaired asap before women's basketball season starts and before the volleyball season gets into full swing. They can have people come in this week to fix the issue.

I cannot see why WBB or Volleyball would want to ever leave Carmichael. Perfectly located on campus. Home of legends like Jordan, DES, Worthy.

IMO fix/remodel both the DES Center and Carmichael.

It's a small dated facility and the program has a small dated fan base. In a new building the expectation for CB and crew would be that they would have facilities equivalent to the men (easy enough to do) and maybe a new building will be an opportunity to give them a fresh start on building a decent fan following. Our wbb support and attendance is, frankly, embarrassing. Doing things the way we've been doing them just because that's the way we've been doing them doesn't work for that sport.

Hey, I resemble that remark! Most of the people who sit around us in sec 107 are senior citizens.

As for the size of the fan base, it's embarrassing that we managed just one sellout last year in a building that seats just 6300. Almost as embarrassing was the traffic control for that game. We left home about 75 minutes before tipoff for what is usually a 20 minute drive to Cobb Deck, and barely got into our seats before the game started.

Our small crowds for WBB and even smaller for Volleyball would look like a drop in the bucket even in the DES Center. I say move when we start selling out games in Carmichael.

The look of an even more empty stadium would hurt recruiting and lack of fan noise negating the homecourt advantage.

As far as traffic control goes it might be better or not be better going to the old airport. Only
time will really tell on that one.

Carmichael in central to our main campus. I will hate the day it is demolished.

As for demolishing the DES Center have you noticed how it has not been said the new blgd would be named the DES Center. Therefore I say it needs to be remodeled.

Pretty sure either Roberts or Newmark. and maybe both, have said any new arena will still have Dean's name on it.

I agree with much of what you have said so here I am only stating some of the sentiments CB has given, not verbatim. She said that their office spaces were so small they couldn’t even get the whole staff in for a meeting. That may be fixable. She also noted that the training and recovery areas were not up to standards. I am a season’s ticket holder and really enjoy games in Carmichael and the thing that puzzles me most is the lack of student support. I will continue pounding on this drum that they should have put the students in the bleachers where they could make attendance a happening. Oh well.

6 String I agree with what you are saying and maybe the move will just have to happen.
I still think they need to take some of Woolen and give CB what she needs and the same for Volleyball.

JMO and I loved playing pick up in Woolen but they can build some new courts somewhere on campus to make more gym space. JMO.

The new arena if it happens should have DES's name on it and it should not be one of these
IBM Arena DES gym things. It should still be Roy W courts also.

I have not heard anyone say anything about the name of the new gym if it is built. But I
hope that has been addressed.

To be honest. No one on this board should get offended by that word. We all from different time periods. Some of us graduated in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and so forth. So if a poster should happen to use a word from their generation, I do not see a problem with that. The university will have to deal with that. Let's be honest, the students these day refer to parents as bro, bra, what, etc. and I do not see the university complaining about this. They surely are not saying yes mam, yes sir, no mam, or no sir. I do not see what all of the fuss is about.

I think the driving factor here is that all new practice facilities with adequate, exclusive space for the program would be included in any new arena plan. To be blunt, Men's basketball will want their own practice gym, their own locker room, facilities, offices, etc.. And due to Title IX the women would get something similar to that in size and quality. This is what happened at Clemson recently, as an example.
At carmichael, ethy have to share space with 4 other varsity programs and the physical ed department "owns" the attached Woollen gym, which has made any expansion and upfit for WBB very hard to come by.

In terms of the roof, the question becomes: what happens to Carmichael after WBB moves out? VB, gymnastics and wrestling still need space, but they could do with a lot less seats and a lot more program space. Price-wise and facility-wise, it may make more sense to tear down than repair...
