Not Kiffin, Major Applewhite to Houston

Promotion for the OC. Probably a better choice for UH if they want to keep a coach for a few years. Kiffin definitely would have jumped ship to the next big job whenever approached. Applewhite might actually stay for a few years.

Personally, I think A&M may latch onto Kiffin if/when Sumlin goes 7-5 next year. Aggie fans are pretty tired of getting their hopes up, starting out fast only to fizzle in the end (sound familiar?). Too much talent on the team and in the state to accept 7-5 for most Aggies.

If Applewhite has success about the only place he'd leave for is Texas, unless he has an unknown desire to coach in the NFL. But, you never know. I thought Mike Shula would have great success at Bama but he went the way of others before. Maybe Applewhite will be great....maybe not. Be fun to watch him develop.

Houston decided to invest now instead of 2-3,4 years from now when Major's stock would be a bit higher.

Applewhite is in that group of guys who are next up and going to be popping off the radar like Fleck, Brohm, Taggart, Rhule were this year.

Good solid higher that will provide stability for the program, fans, boosters, and on the recruiting trail.

I don't think Kiffen is the hot commodity people think. Houston, Cincinnati, Baylor, Western. No one wants the guy. He's had head coaching jobs and not set the world on fire. No one thinks he's going to win and leave. They think he's going to lose and fail.He's having to take a big step down and prove he's more than just a coordinator at power programs.

According to Satellite radio yesterday morning there's more to the story. Houston wanted to sign someone to a longer term contract with a huge buy-out.....hoping to trap the coach for a while. This immediate turned off their leading candidates....Kiffin, Miles, Riley.....except for Applewhite.

It's a risky move. What if Applewhite doesn't work and they're stuck with a coach for a while? It probably would've been less risky to continue hiring bigger named guys who are more experienced to keep the program relevant. From Briles, to Sumlin, to Herman......they were doing fairly well. They should've continued the same path until a bigger conference picked them up and they were an established/stable product.
