I might be naive, but I still don't see the big deal.
Didn't he only bet on the Reds to win? That, to me, is nothing.
He can't even go into the hallway in is own home. The insanity must stop #freepete

As a life long baseball fan (never really a Pete Rose fan) I'm more offended by a Mark McGwire or a Barry Bonds any day than I am Pete Rose -- until you show me evidence that he did something to intentionally lose a game.
Just being a degenerate gambler while giving it his best effort to win on the field or in the dugout doesn't bother me. Taking banned substances to cheat the game bothers me quite a bit. Baseball's record book is tainted forever by the unethical activities of the McGwires, Bonds and Sosas. That is far more damaging to the sport than one addicted moron blowing his money betting on his team to win. All of Pete Rose's hits stand up to history's measure. It makes me sick to think of Barry Bonds holding the career HR record instead of Hank Aaron, and Bonds and McGwire holding the single season mark instead of Maris and Ruth.
His performance on the field is the reason he deserves to be in the Hall. Fine if he's banned from participation for the rest of his life. I agree that the drug takers are the real villians. Their behavior had a definite impact on the outcome of games.
I get that Maverick. I don't think it is what Rose did, but I get the argument. And as I said above, I'm not on a personal quest to see Rose reinstated. I just think the penalty is outsized for the crime, and I think whatever his motives as a gambler, he harmed the game much less than guys who obliterated the record books while on steroids.
MLB can define its own crimes and set punishments appropriately. Participants gambling on baseball games can and have harmed MLB financially and otherwise. PEDs (McGwire and Sosa) actually saved baseball and led to astronomical (no Houston) profits and popularity. Team ownership, managers and most of all the commissioner's office encouraged their use until their was a public outcry.I just think the penalty is outsized for the crime, and I think whatever his motives as a gambler, he harmed the game much less than guys who obliterated the record books while on steroids.
He's made millions per year hawking autographs and memorabilia and pimping himself out to go to dinner with the highest bidder. I wish I could piss away into a career like that.He had a very long career as a player. He would have had a very long career in managing/commentating but he pissed it away. He lost 25 years of apossible career because of this. He has been punished more than enough. Time to lift the ban.
Alex Rodriguez is still plying btw.
Baseball is filled with so many self righteous ********. The fact that Ty Cobb is in the HOF and the fact that drug addicts got a billion chances and steroid users still get to play today while Rose is out, is comical.
He doesn't need the HOF for any validation on an amazing career. He is one of the best to ever play the game. We all know it .
The problem with "betting on your team to win" -- unless you bet on every game and bet the same amount on every game -- is it inevitably affects your coaching decisions, which, of course, directly affects the game's integrity.
Let's say that Rose, as manager, knows the Astros are coming into Cincinnati for a three-game series the next day and decides to bet $1,000 on the first game (because of a favorable pitching match-up or whatever). He doesn't have any money on the Cubs game tonight though.
However, tonight's game turns out to be closer than expected. So, instead of bringing in his #1 closer to protect a 1-run lead (because he doesn't have any money on the Cubs game), he brings in someone else, the Reds blow the lead, and lose the game -- all because Rose was going to bet on the Reds to win tomorrow.
Ty Cobb was a horrible human being, but his on-the-field accomplishments were too significant for him to be left out of the HOF? C'mon.
