Not sure how the rule works, but the UVA guy clearly fumbled the ball...

...on the punt return that Quick blew up. Zaccheaus (#33) didn't catch the ball cleanly, and Quick separated him and the ball in a split second.

Just watched the replay in HD, and a frame-by-frame check confirms it. Even the announcer noticed it.

So what is the rule now that the "halo" is gone?...

Halo isn't gone. It is still in play when the punt returner signals fair catch. The Quick play was clean because he hit the player after the receiver touched the ball. It is really no different than a receiver catching a pass once the receiver touches the ball he is fair game.

It was a fumble, but surprise, surprise...the Ref's blew it.

Even with replay. And speaking of replay...

how is it that 50% of the time, the call goes AGAINST what is obvious on TV? We will be watching a game, and I'll bet whatever the talking heads (and everybody watching) think they saw, will be the exact opposite of the call from the booth.

It seems the replay official is not going to over rule the call on the field unless they just absolutely HAVE to. This non fumble/muff is just one example.

So why waste 10-15 minutes a game with replay? We lived with calls on the field, good or bad, for years. Replay has caused as many controversies as it's cured IMO.

I thought the play was clean. Receiver did not signal fair catch and quick hit the guy simultaneously when he touched the ball.

It was a good hit by Quick but once they called a review I thought the worse because we lost 2 reviews earlier. One on the interception when they said he did not have control of the ball before his knee touched. The replay shows he took 2 steps before he went to the ground.
The other was on a pass and they said he went out of bounds before he had control. On both plays the announcers were saying that both the interception and the pass was a good play and would not be over ruled but they were. I don't understand why they have replay if they can't get it right anyway.

The Ref's are sticking up for each other. They don't like IR because they may look bad.

If video review can't be clear, how can anyone fault a Ref's call in real time?

Do away with it and quit stopping momentum and emotion. Bad calls have evened out for years, and it's obvious that IR isn't fixing it many times.

Sorry, am confused about what the beef in the thread is? I was at the game and all I recall is we got the ball inside their 10. What did I miss?
