Nothing changes if Pope can’t solve the recruiting issue

I’ve been very critical of Pope. I’m not going to pretend that I was ever on page with the hire in the first place. Our early season woes certainly confirmed my fears about Pope. But last year we had a pretty good offense and poor defense while this year we have a pretty good defense and p*ss-poor offense. If we can manage to put two and two together, he’ll have potential.

Today was a good win, I’m not going to sugarcoat it and say it was a great win. I hope that now that Lowe and JQ are playing we can see good season blossom from our early season woes. But we can’t ignore the elephant in the room: our recruiting woes. And as we’ve seen today with JQ being massive game changer, we-need-elite-players. Not a group of role players. Not middling mid-major guys. The elite. We don’t need a lot of them, but we need a couple to lead Pope’s teams if we want to get back where Kentucky belongs.

We need a smaller group of higher quality players, that’ll solve many of our frustrations with both too many role players and the incredibly frustrating rotation patterns.

If Pope can save this season, make it to the tournament, he obviously gets another year to turn things around. I think boosters will support that if he can show a turnaround. But if he can’t make the self-reflection necessary for his own personal and the staff’s problems to solve his greatest weakness, another year does nothing. I think he’s smart enough to realize that a smaller group of higher quality players is superior to amassing a large group of role players. I feel confident that he’ll make that necessary change in the offseason.

But I’m not even including the JMI hangups.

Pope has to put his foot down. I don’t care how he does it, but nothing will change with recruiting or the transfer portal without major changes to the JMI contract or how they present their terms potential players. We all know that that albatross is not going to go away. Surely Pope is well aware that he’ll be scapegoated if he cannot solve our recruiting woes. But he and his staff have to get changes in place. The fans can’t do it. He and and the boosters and the powers that be will be the ones to at the very least soften the blow of the JMI deal.

Right, everything is fine! We didn’t just have issues with Collins and Stokes and didn’t have a number of whiffs last transfer portal cycle! Our only elite guy was someone coming off an ACL and took almost half the season to get back.

He’s gotta do better than that.

It's why I'm not as worried about Pope and more worried about Mitch/JMI
Mitch and JMI are the main concern. I don’t think Pope would possibly be recruiting this bad without that happening. But Mark needs Mitch, so he’s going to do everything he can to keep him there. Without Mitch he’d likely be replaced at some point by another AD who wants his own guy and has a short trigger. I think this is one of the reasons Mitch is trying to stay on in case Mark Hill isn’t taking over.

Not going to lie it’s very scary right now for UK. This JMI deal could be a death sentence if it’s not fixed. So it’s tough to get hyped for any win when usually we would. Best to take this a game at a time right now and sort the rest out as we go. So this season, we have a shot to possibly break way to a final four maybe. Doubtful with out shooting, but Lowe, if healthy, can play his way to being that shooter.

All in all, Kentucky has got to get to a point where we are Kentucky. And we’re coming close to a decade where we’re not even close to that. Jumping for joy over a win like this is scary. It’s Indiana lite. Be happy to stop the bleeding but if you’re somehow satisfied with UK and Mark then yes that’s a huge problem.

Let’s see where it goes. If they can win the SEC that’s up to standard. It’s where I want to see this go.

Nope. You are just a troll. Don't want to be called out, don't troll.
It’s dumb crap like this. Anyone who refuses to push 100% positivity in every post HAS GOT TO BE A TROLL.

I wasn’t even being negative. Pointing out the things he needs to change is simply too much for some of you parasocial dweebs that care more about Pope than you do Kentucky basketball.

Yea Moreno is going to be something. He’s got a sophomore game in a freshman body. He hasn’t put it together yet, but when he does, I think he could be one of the best bigs in the country. Not saying he’s close but he can be.
He's getting there. I like his drive and his effort. I'm glad we have JQ but Moreno needs playing time too.

Look you've and others say the exact ssamething over and over and you start another effing thread about it. There was alot of positive to take away from this game but you and several others continue to whine and ruminate over what hasnt lappened yet. Many of the naysayers said JQ wouldnt even play again. Many have said the Cats cant defend or get physical. I know the one poster has cut and pasted over and over "congratulations you won your championship". But nobody is saying that. We are enjoying moving foward in the here and now.

He has a lot of future potential and I think that getting some top 50-100 guys would make me more confident. It’s concerning how we have no one for the 2026 class. I would be hopeful with a group of top 30-50 players going into next year with some elite portal transfers.

If it’s a JMI problem he has to step up. Mitch is not going to be Pope’s boss much longer. If you got the coaching chops to coach here, which I think he does, he needs to not let himself be scapegoated.

There’s no way to overlook how bad recruiting is. This is Kentucky. It’s the worst recruiting we’ve ever seen in our history.

We’ve got a situation where some are intentionally trying to lower the standards here to protect the coach. Not saying you’re doing that but there’s 4 or 5 here that are absolutely trying to do that. It’s not gonna work either. Recruiting is half of his job. He’s got an F for the coming cycle. We can’t win if we can’t recruit.

For now I think taking an approach to see if we can put something together now that JQ is here would be wise. To stop the bleeding and create some breathing room. Kentucky is suffocating and we are inching closer to Indiana. And if you read some of these posters, they are fine with that as long as the charismatic coach is safe and secure. They’re easily bought.

I’ve been fairly positive since the win. I’ve given Pope his props. Today was a good win. But simply pointing out that he needs to make some changes, even going as far as to suggest that I think he will make them going forward, makes me a troll.

Pointing out that he needs to go with a smaller, higher quality roster going forward? Which would solve fans’ frustrations with Pope’s substitution patterns and obviously make us a better team. Troll!

Suggesting that Pope should put his foot down and not allowed to be scapegoated by Mitch Barnhart and JMI’s stupidity? Troll! And this accusation doesn’t even make sense! I’m showing empathy for the guy but I guess poo-pooing Mitch Barnhart and the JMI contract is troll-worthy material too.

Guys thinking that Sweet 16 exits and 6th place finishes is good enough by Kentucky standards means you’re obviously not a troll. Jacka*sses defending the JMI nonsense is obviously not on anyone’s troll-radar.

Hell, I guess thinking that Mitch Barnhart being considered one of the worst AD’s in Kentucky basketball history is worthy of being labeled a troll!

I’ve made constructive criticisms. I’m not blindly bashing Pope. But apparently that’s not good enough. He won so obviously we should only sing praises. The man is making $5 million a year to coach Kentucky, he’s not your friend. He should be constantly looking for ways to improve himself, his staff, his players and the program. Stop being parasocial for a guy who doesn’t even know you exist.

Pope had a heck of a recruiting class last season: Moreno, Johnson, Lewis, Hawthorne and Jelavic. Now he lost Acaden Lewis due to signing Lowe, which was a big loss - especially given Lowe's injury. The transfer portal is where he missed some guys - most prominently Yaxel Lendeborg and multiple 2G options - but some of those "misses" he (nor any other coach) had any realistic shot at.

I was there in Rupp when Pope was introduced. He yelled into the microphone “We are here to win BANNERS”.

He knows what the expectations are here. He knows the clock is ticking, for any coach that is hired here, himself included.

I guess I just look at it like… he’ll sink or he’ll swim. I hope he swims, but if he sinks because he was handcuffed by JMI, then Mitch will be sent packing with him. Capiluto be damned. The powers that really run UK athletics won’t stand for it.

I am not. But you can't hold Mark Pope to a Championship or bust standard if your team has struggled to get out of the first round for years and you left him with an empty roster to begin with

See, this is what I disagree with. No one is trying to lower the standards. They are saying let the season play out before crusifying the coach. Several factors have played into how the season has unfolded so far (including missteps by Pope) but to just trash the season, coaching staff, and players before the season is even completed is as bad for the program as the things you perceive to be a problem. And it is constantly in almost every thread, no matter the topic. This is what posters are having a problem with.

You may very well be right in the end. But your outlook has been noted. Very many times.

I honestly am not trying to criticize you, but maybe you do not realize how often you say the same thing.

Like I said in other threads if we fail in football it’s JMI if not it’s the coach
