A while back I thought of a hybrid model where the team is school-related, but you get so many players on the academic track (majority) and so many on the "pro" track, who get paid more, don't have to be enrolled as students, and don't count against a school's graduation rates if that still matters. Could something like that work? They would basically be the 5-stars or highly ranked 4-stars under today's system.
I suppose it could work in theory, but having non-students playing on a college team would be a bridge too far for a lot of people.

I was listening to The Athletic's college football podcast this morning and they've done a lot of good work around NIL, how it works, and its impact for certain programs. They reviewed a few NIL contracts for some 'recruits' including a three star DL who is getting $125,000 a year. They also conceded it is extremely likely there is pay for play going on, but that the NCAA doesn't have the interest or resources to do anything about it. Says conferences will likely step in if anyone does.

Many of us still go watch the local high school teams. There is still energy and excitement at that level.
You must live in Mayberry RFD. More cheating and back door politicking in high school sports than college. Mostly to benefit the adults who are directly or tangentially associated with HS sports.

"College" football no longer exists in what we used to call Division 1. It slipped away when we started to have 100k seat stadiums and national TV contracts, and you can't even see it in the rearview mirror anymore.
So, either the 1950s when Michigan Stadium was increased to over 100,000 in capacity or in the 1970s when the NCAA instituted the Division 1 and D-1AA in college football because of the disparity in revenue?

I read a great book on this in the late 90's. A former Northwestern (if I recall) player suggested doing away with the charade of college athletics and officially affiliating college teams with pro teams. For example, Pitt could be the Steelers minor league team. PSU could be the Eagles minor league team. Rutgers for the Giants, etc.

The NFL teams would cover all the expenses, INCLUDING tuition for the kids, 95% of which will never have a cup of coffee in the NFL. So you still have the notion of student athletes, but without the NCAA heavy handing things. I think he called it the age-grouped-professional league or something like that. It was a great read. I'm gonna try to find my copy and re-read it, as it was very prophetic.

There are 32 NFL teams and 130 or so D-1 schools Each team would have to support roughly 4 programs, which means (assuming scholarship kids only), 340 football players, PLUS the players on their own actual NFL teams. If that is the case, then do the HS kids still get to pick where they go, or do the teams "draft" kids?

What about coaches? Would the CFB coaches make less or more than the associated NFL team HC?

This sounds bizarre.

I see you tried to link a media to your post but could not open - if you find the name of this book, post again - I will look for it.

Bottom line is why would the NFL pay for something that it currently gets for free? And if college football evolves in a manner that it's no longer a reliable feeder, the NFL will develop a substitute on its terms a let the colleges pound sand.

Exactly! It is bizarre!

You know, you sound almost as smart as this Art guy who was on the other board. Almost. 😉

Not the same guy. Art on the old board was a gentle, kind, considerate soul, patient with fools and charlatans alike

Much like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus, he is just a wishful figment of a child's imagination.

Ummm, I said nothing about cheating or not cheating. That topic wasn't even on my mind.

If you'd read what I wrote, I was responding to the poster who stated that the level of play would plummet. Maybe so; who cares? My comment was that many people watch HS sports and have a lot of energy, enthusiasm and excitement for it. They are local kids, maybe even our own, out there playing to win.
