Just when NU shows signs of taking over, things fall apart. BMac hit with third foul after being responsible for Cats' first 8 points of second half, 47-35 with Fairfield going for 3-point play after TO

First time I've seen this in 40 years covering NU hoops. Wrong player shoots free throw. Called to refs' attention and right player goes to line for one-and-one. Of course, second player made both. Thanks for screwing up my scoresheet Fairfield.

I'm sorry but out guys simply need to play harder. The D movement is lazy and slow and we are getting outrebounded.

Collins draws bench warning for stepping on court to encourage his team on defense. This is very sad.

At 8:14 Olah on bench with four fouls, four other Cats with 3. One Fairfield reserve has 3.

This might be the worst refed game I've ever watched. Any chances we've ever had at building momentum have been squashed by ridiculous ghost fouls...

NU 61 FF 54
We've seen some pressing defense - good practice!
Olah running on D breaks up a pass! GO BIG GUY!
Tap set the screen on O then draws the charge on D!
More JVZ and Lumpkin
Tap draws the foul and hits both FTs
Back to back offensive rebounds for Fairfield (UUgh!)
BMac quick shot off the screen for two
Fairfield comes storming back with a few quick scores while NU just keeps missing three point shots - The lead is down to 7 points
CC calls the timeout

BMac may have just saved NU - hits a floater, makes a steal and then fouled on a drive with a possible 3-point play. Cats up 72-65

At the under 4 break
NU 72 Fairfield 65
Getting ugly! Fairfield scoring near the rim while NU shoots long threes. Lead gets down to three
Cold shooting for the cats - Lumpkin saves an offensive rebound with a tap out, then gets a pass under the rim and scores while drawing a foul - Lumpkin's FT makes the lead 6 points
Tap posts up and draws the foul - but misses the front end
NU is cold cold cold, while Fairfield comes within three points
BMac stretches the lead to 5 with a floater
BMac with another drive and FG
BMac is saving our bacon tonight

Final Thoughts NU 79 FF 72

1. Too close!
2. JVZ showed that he can contribute on Offense and hit FTs
3. Falzone has to pass up three pointers when covered
4. Too much hanging out pat the 3 point line - need more cutters!
5. Waiting for Linsey to get on the flow - has not really clicked yet this year
6. Not seeing much contribution from Ash - he took one open 3 pointer and missed - looking for him to develop and earn minutes this year
7. Handles pressure well
8. Rotating lots of players (looking for answers early)
9. Don't remember seeing Skelly? - Even with 8 fouls between our two bigs
Bonus: CC gets a technical with 1.7 seconds left in the game ?????

That was an entirely unsatisfying victory. Our guys seem to just be going through the motions. These guys are veterans now. They know they need a higher intensity level. This is not anywhere close to an NCAA team unless they start playing a lot harder. Losing Law really hurts. He brought intensity and athleticism. Taphorn is taking many of those minutes and if he is not hitting his 3s, he brings little else. Pretty bummed out about this basketball season after such excitement leading up to it. The Law energy and lackluster 2 games just kills so much of the excitement.

Completely agree. Worst defensive team I've seen in some time. Tre looks like he's in a funk. Scottie hasn't stepped up yet.

On the bright side, Olah is playing well, and Joey calmed down and played much better tonight. BMac took over in crunch time and willed the team to win.

Maybe they just are playing to the level of the competition, but after a good start to the game Cats sleepwalk through the last 30 minutes.

NU outscores Fairfield 23-7 in points off turnovers. Fairfield committed 14 turnovers to NU's 7. Fairfield out-rebounded NU 41-23. Fouls were even at 22, but most of Fairfield's came in final couple of minutes. NU was 7-26 from three-point while Fairfield was 7-25.

The ref call the T with less than two seconds left....one of the most dickish moves I've seen from an official

That's just garbage. That comes down to effort.
Not that it's acceptable but it was 41-33, not 41-23. Having said that, some of the overreaction by some on this board is hilarious. Of course they didn't play well tonight, but they won and will continue to improve. How many teams have been upset early in the season so far? Not saying we're an NCAA team but to read some of the conclusions that have already been made about this team is ridiculous.

Why so many fouls?
Because we were a lot slower and flat footed against Fairfield. This ref crew is fine. We have had them multiple times before and a good crew. Collins had no chair and stood the whole time, and was on the court a lot. I wasn't surprised the refs finally dinged him. A few thoughts

1. We really have no movement to the basket. I'd like to see someone cutting to the hoop successfully other than 4 guys standing at the arc or one guy driving by himself to the hoop. We can't rely on our 3s. We didn't go down low to Olah very much at all.

2. We will not be able to count on Taphorn. He simply is not a pure shooter. His defense is not the best either. Losing Law is really bad.
3. Skelly didn't play. I found that odd but oh well.
4. Ash is a long ways away. He is more raw than BMC or Sobo as a freshman.
5. JVZ is a great role player for us. a few of his fouls were debatable.
6 We will have problems when the opponent has a smaller center that is quicker than Olah. Olah was out of position a lot. Nothing against him, it's just a matchup problem.
7. Lumpkin is needed and fills the part.
8. I'd like to see if Lindsay has any moves to the basket. He is fine but I think he can be better utilized.

Columbia will be a big challenge Friday night. Demps can't be 4-for-16 in that game or we will lose.
