Love the article, though “…some of the darkest points in NU basketball history”…seems a bit inflammatory. We certainly struggled a lot when they started but have improved each year. And games have been competitive throughout that time period, unlike many, many points in NU history.
Between Buie, Audige, Beran, and Verhoeven….can any come back for the extra COVID year?
Verhoeven is the only player on the roster who is out of eligibility after this season.
That's valid. Lord knows that NU has had much darker periods in its history. I would say that the 2019-20 season, with the 3-17 Big Ten mark, was about as bleak as it gets. And NU had a long losing streak each year -- as many as 13 in a row -- that maybe made the season seem worse than it was. But even though last year's team was just a game under .500, I was very pessimistic about the future of NU basketball. Boy, was I wrong.
The hoops team went 30-81 and 7-64 in the Big Ten during my 4 years of NU. There was a forfeit victory (not included in the 7-64 record) due to one of the Gopher scandals during the Dutcher era. Cats won the second game against the Gophers too, in which they played walk-ons and a few football players. I would go to the exhibition against Marathon Oil just to see them win.
Aside from the shocking victory at home against Indiana, my most vivid late 80s image is Bill Foster signaling for a time out during one of the many opponents' scoring runs. Sad times.

Well, I got you beat, albeit slightly. During my four years NU went 27-84 overall and an identical 7-64 in the Big Ten.
You have to admire Foster’s consistency: he went 2-16 in the B1G in five of his seven years. The other two were 0-18 (ouch) and 3-15. He never cracked double digits in overall wins — nine was his highest, three times.
Lou, this is how bad it was back then. I get a call from Foster that they are about to go down to Lafayette to play Purdue and don't have any tape of their latest game. I dubbed one off so they could scout watch on their VCR machine on the way down there. When they pulled the upset, Bill sent me a very nice NU pullover as a thank you.
