NU's offense is little more than watching a pickup game

Nothing more than a lot of one-on-one action, no one really sets up anyone else, the ball doesn't rotate well, the center ends up 20 feet from the basket with the shot clock winding down, the shooters can't shoot, the team misses free throws in crunch time, the "lead guard" throws the ball to the other team without provocation, the team cannot adjust to a switching defense, and so on and so on.

I love the way this team plays defense but absolutely HATE the way this team plays offense. CCC has a lot of work to do on that end of the court in the offseason.

Last thought: do not start Ryan Taylor another game this season. Put AJ back in and bring Taylor off the bench to see if perhaps he finds his shooting touch. I think Taylor has started every game this season (did CCC promise him that in the grad transfer process???); he doesn't deserve to start anymore and maybe it would actually do him some good.

There were LOTS of open threes tonight. There is some good ball movement to find open shooters, probably as well as can be expected without a point guard, but we can't capitalize.

And I think that was the problem last year, even with a great point guard. If he kicks it out to an open shooter, we need to drain the shot.

1,000 times this. We just can't shoot right now. I believe it is more psychological than anything else at this point. When you lose and lose depite playing your tails off, it's frustrating...

Or the team simply isn’t good. Guard play has killed us and coaching has not helped.

Of course they're not good, they don't make shots! But the point is, the open looks are there. The coaching helps to get those open looks, but coaches can't put the ball in the basket. When you miss 10-15 wide open shots a game, night in and night out, there is not much the coaches can do about that. Falzon, who is normally dead on, even missed two of the more wide open shots he will ever see. Got to think the weight of losing is weighing on the players shooting abilities at this point...

Who is responsible for filling up the roster? Who chooses which guys are on the floor?

They sagged off of Gaines all night, cut off his driving lane and dared him to shoot it. He had better work on his shot all off-season.
Also, will somebody please tell me what they see in Miller Kopp? He’s slow, has a slow release, doesn’t move well with or without the ball and can’t play D. He’ll be relegated to a few minutes off the bench when Beran and Jones get here.

No ready to write off Kopp. I think he will be fine. Kid will be aggressive as soon as CCC takes the shackles off him. Willing to drive and mix it up. Decent stroke. I think he averages 10 points next year. His D needs to improve.

He has plenty of playing time last might, so apparently the shackles are already off. Didn't do much with it, though. I think he will be fine, but this argument that he is somehow shackled is making less and less sense with each passing game...

Sure we had a lot of open 3's, but some of them were by Nebraska's design (see Gaines, Pardon and Benson for example). What I'm missing is good cutting and passing; we should be getting more layups with the overplaying defense like doubles on Pardon every time he touched it down low. The only time I saw a good example of cohesion was Pardon getting the ball at the high post, getting double teamed and passing it down low to Gaines who flashed open for the wide open dunk. 15 TO's to 8 assists is atrocious, and that's what our stats were last night.

Huh, how many minutes did Kopp play yesterday? He can’t average more than 10 minutes after he left the starting lineup. CCC is in his face at most every error.

i am actually surprised that no one has commented on the fact that CCC installed a new offense the week before the iowa game. mostly the actions are different and the guys are running different routes. there is a lot more movement too.

i think NU shot something like 5/28 from 3 against nebraska and A LOT of those 3s were wide open.

funny when those shots go in for teams like michigan there are no pick-up game comments

I just rewatched all the 3's from the game, we shot 5-24 overall, by my count 4-17 on open shots and 1-7 on contested shots. Law missed all 3 of his open 3's, Gaines was 2-6 on open shots, falzon missed both of his open 3's, Taylor's only 3 was an open shot and miss, Turner was 1-2 on open shots but the 1 came with 10 seconds to go. Not going to win games when you don't hit the easy ones.

I guess my point is if we are not a very good outside shooting team (which we aren't), why not install more set plays with ball movement toward the rim off some good cuts? Just saying let's emphasize that more than jacking 3's. Make the D pay a few times and then watch the perimeter really open up. I'd like to see MORE PASSING, LESS DRIBBLING in this offense.

Nice post! And I think that we can all agree that going 4-17 on open threes (including 2 from a sharpshooter like Falzon) is most likely not due to coaching....

Why are you insulting pickup games like that?

Because if you cannot hit the open threes, the cutting lanes are not open.
