Nyck returning kickoffs?

DeCamillis said the job would be his as of right now.

Seems a logical use of his speed. Don't know how elusive he is in that capacity, but if he can get in the open field, nobody will catch him.

Haven't really seen his speed be a factor yet that I can recall.

Nyck is fast but he is not quick, which is the asset a true kick returner needs.
Yeah, that's what I was referencing with his elusiveness. Usually big kick returns are the result of at least one quick cut and elusive play, and often more than one. My guess is they're just trying to find a way to tap into his speed. That's the most logical spot, I guess, to put a speedster. If kicks have good hang time, that could take away his speed advantage, though.

That seems like an excellent way to get Nyck hurt.
Also had that thought.

A J Green was injured in college when Richt put him in to do a kickoff return against some cupcake team.

I guess it's going with the Spurrier mentality of putting your best athletes at special teams.

But, I do think the coaches are just trying to find a way to unlock Nyck's speed advantage. It hasn't been a factor in the passing game. Speed is his #1 attribute and we haven't been able to capitalize on it his first 2 seasons.

Maybe its as simple as "get him more touches". He has yet to become a primary WR target, and we would love to get his athleticism more involved.

He will be the tallest returner i have ever seen. Compare him to our best returner ever(Ace) and the best ever (Devin Hester) sizes and ???
I remember watching Carlos Dunlap return punts and kicks back in his high school days for Fort Dorchester. That was a sight to see.

Wish i could've seen that or maybe just don't remember it. Actually went to a few of their games during that period. Memory has been spotty since Laprad thought it was a good idea to move me down from from safety to middle lb against wishbone teams at 150 sopping wet. 😂😂😂

Sorry I don`t like it - too much injury risk. Half of the time we returned kickoffs we didn`t make it to the 25 yd. line. Just fair catch all of them and don`t start out in a hole. The old block in the back will put us starting from the 10 yd. line too - I know that happened as well. Nyck too valuable to risk it to me. I`m sure we have other capable guys but again just let it bounce into the end zone or fair catch it.

I like it! He hasn’t proven to be anywhere near irreplaceable at WR thus far, and coupled with so many KOs being touchbacks, I don’t see the injury risk any higher than playing 35-40 snaps on offense. We gotta get some return on a 5* recruit with world-class speed somehow.

I more or less agree. Yeah, there's injury risk, but it's low. Thus far, we haven't had any return on his speed talent. I don't think he's quick enough to create much separation at WR early in routes. His speed is downhill.

Harbor is big enough to not fall down at first contact.

Seeing the field and planning your entry is more important than ‘quick’; quick is more relevant to running backs. Once the entry avenue is found, speed is king (Gayle Sayers 101.)

Harbor will probably be pretty good at returns.

Must hit that ''point of entry'' quickly or you get nailed.
Harbor's speed comes with time to accelerate.

Not supposed to sound like a good idea, it’s supposed to be something that will work based on the decision of people in a lot better position to make said decision. I remember when some of these same insights were said about Xavier Leggette.

Fortunately we get to see what happens anyway.

With the overwhelming majority of KO's now soaring into the End Zone how much of a impact is this really going to make.

This. Also, I'm wondering if its worth it to return kicks anymore. Rarely, a big one hits, but I wonder if average field position would be better just fair catching.

That's an NFL mentality as well. The best teams put their best players on special teams.

I guess we could just let him sit on the bench. That would minimize his injury risk.

Who was the last Gamecock kick returner you recall getting hurt on a kick return? This is a big nothing burger to worry about. Injuries happen in football.
