If Pope leaves this year then will Barnhart make the coaching decision?
If you heard what he said in the Will Stein press conference, I’d say yes. He specifically made a statement about having to do “the next one” referring to coaching searches. People today are in agreement that Barnhart did not hire Stein —- but if it doesn’t work out, they’ll be sure to remind you that Barnhart made that hire. It’s a snake oil game where everyone wins.

Mitch's contract ends end of June. If Pope is let go, before that, more than likely. This is why I think the Pope gets 3 years. New AD will either fire IF he has a poop season or he will give him one year to prove himself. Its better if the new AD after Mitch hires. No one trusts Mitch right now.

Apparently all of the good hires, Mitch was over ridden. But the bad hires and contracts were all Mitch. Funny how it works.

It seems ridiculous to be upset about Pearl not being offered when Pearl retired 1 year later. You're mad you didn't get ONE YEAR of Bruce Pearl before we were forced into his son taking over? Or maybe we're doing a coaching search again?

Dude had built contender after contender at Auburn. He wasn't going to come here and keep coaching because he loved Kentucky so much. He's wanted the job for years. But he was ready to be done.

I would have liked Bruce. But, NOT offering him was the right answer now that we know he had 1 final year in the tank. Mitch didn't know it. But of all the things to be mad at Mitch for, this aint 1.

Oats couldn't leave because of whatever custody agreement with his wife. That was talked about a lot during the coaching search.

That custody stuff was a made up rumor. Everything I can find says he is still married since 1992 with 3 girls and he has stuck by his wife as she battled through cancer in 2015 I believe. Public records say he is still married.

Mitch can have the credit for good hires, Calipari, Brooks, Stoops, Mitchell? But having a 50% bad hire strike rate on the major sports along with the terrible contracts, it's inexcusable. Hired Gillespie, Joker, Elzy ... Pope (unqualified) yet to be seen how pope works out, but trending as a bad hire as of now. And we don't know the details of the JMI experiment and what that actually means or how it's effecting things.

Good.coaches don't wanna come here because they don't wanna work for Mitch. I'd almost guarantee it. He is not hungry and committed to winning.

no offense and i understand kentuckys basketball history etc but since nate has been at bama he has had the better program. In the world that exists today he can accomplish everything at bama he could at kentucky. Nate is pretty settled into tuscaloosa. His oldest is finishing up at bama..his middle will be attending in next year or so and he also has a young daughter. His ex-wife is settled in Tuscaloosa. Leaving would not be easy. And i know he is happy and enjoys tuscaloosa.
How well you know Nate? He's never been divorced.

I promise you, Nathanael Justin Oats is actually a good friend of mine, and I spoke with him those days and he said UK never called. I also spoke with him this morning and he said he doesn't know you and you're making up stuff. He told me when Kentucky calls he will take the job in the future, as well as Kansas or UNC.
Mentions a divorce but he's been married since 97

Supposedly, and I say that because it was KSR who said it I believe, the board of trustees told Mitch that Pearl, Oates and Miller were off the table due to prior bad acts. This was because Stoops got the athletic department put on probation right before the hire due to the players getting paid and not working.

Who knows, he probably wouldn’t have offered Oates or Pearl anyway because he’s a walking screw up.

The best thing we can hope for is Mitch gives notice to retire next month and UK hires a real AD and not one of Mitch’s stooges (Marc Hill and Peevy). The new AD fires Pope and actually knows what the hell he’s doing and goes and gets Oates or Hurley. I know that’s a pipe dream because so many impossible things have to happen but we have to hope it happens because it’s clear to me Pope has no shot here. He’s looking real hard at missing the tournament this year and next year looks no better. His recruiting has been absolutely abysmal given where he is and the NIP he has.
0% chance that happens

Why was Otzelberger never offered? I always hear some people suggest that we went 7-8 coaches deep and they all said “no” but we heard that when BCG was hired and we knew that wasn’t true because Calipari was never offered.
He’s a good coach, but he has deep ties to Iowa State. Pretty much got his start in coaching as an assistant there for several years before eventually coming back as the head coach. I believe his wife was also a pretty significant player in the history of their women’s team. He may just feel like he’s already home and not be putting his name out there for other jobs.
