I think the RB rotation is sometimes a bit curious, but then again, Wilbon had a couple points where he showed he wasn't ready to handle a huge load of downs. On one of his handful of carries he fumbled the ball at the boundary. He was also the RB in when Lee got rocked by the DL that one play.

We were a few plays away from winning by 2-3 TDs - didn't make them and Arky St almost made us pay for it. We could not get them off the field. Oregon's offense should be able to attack the same things ASU did - so unless we play alot better on D we'll have to score 50+ to win next week.

If you can't pick up the blitz you won't be playing much.

Were we in a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 much last night?[/QUOTE]
Against Oregon we may wish they were bigger to try to tackle Freeman........just saying matchups change game to game.
There's some shell shock over that 77 number.

Hopefully the Huskers bring their A game.
Arkansas State is a MUCH better team/program than Southern Utah. I think SU won 3 games last year. I could be wrong but I think Gus Malzahn recruited most of the seniors on Arkansas St's team.

I sensed that the team wasn't mentally prepared for the level at which Arky St played. The Red Wolves came in prepared and executed a game plan that exploited our weakness. And there were quality players on that team.
The kids better get their head right. Oregon's offense has more than one way to beat you. And quite frankly, Diaco's appoach (above all, keep the play in front of you) counters the Duck's craving for quick strike scores and lessens the number of possessions they get. Tre had 198 yards last night on 31 carries. To contrast, Newby's greatest productivity last year was 27 for 140.
We will have to play better D on the perimeter against Oregon. And Langs has a possible work horse in Bryant. He can now figure out how best to use him.

I got the objective part covered, not so much the knowledgable. I watch the games for entertainment, so only opinions here.

I'll start by saying I used to be a huge fan of the upset. I would watch all the big games hoping for upsets so the Huskers could move up in the rankings. What I found out, almost every single time, the better team wins. I took grief for this when it applied to Pelini, it still applies to Riley, but....a win is win.

- Lee looked pretty good to me. A hair under 60% completion with no INT's and 2 td's.
- Tre Bryant is the running back. Around 6 ypc which is good. 31 carries but no receptions. That's a lot of carries.
- YOLO bombs are part of Langsdorf's playbook, not a sign that TA was going off the reservation. Maybe going down field 10-20% of attempts is what we'll see.
- There are circumstances when the cost of incomplete passes outweighs the benefits of a complete passes. One of those circumstances, mid to late 4th quarter up by 14.
- Still no pass rush, against an inexperienced, lower tier Oline.
- We played Arkansas State, not Alabama.

I still think our defense can be okay before we get to the tough half of our schedule, but pass protection has to improve a lot. My old rule of thumb, I expect around 70 plays per game. We had 70 plays. Ark St had 68 pass attempts, wow, and 89 plays overall.

Impression of Lee is that he is a solid, above-average college passing QB. Will handle the position well for us, but I didn't see the pro-scouts-are-drooling stuff so far. He had that fine long TD ball, but also several long balls that were short or badly wide, and threw to some well-covered receivers at times. Like everything at present though, we'll have to see what happens against the better overall personnel next week.

On Bryant, I was surprised at his durability, and impressed with the 192 yds. He is very smooth, hope he stays healthy. Don't recall him catching any passes, are we throwing to RBs in the new scheme?

D, I can only hope that this was an aberration. We were doing better in the third quarter it seemed, and I thought maybe we had finally made needed adjustments. But then we looked shaky again at the end. We knew pretty early that it was going to be pass, pass, pass, but didn't seem ready for that. Not impressed with our DL.

Riley had stated before the game and again post game that there was not a good way for our scout team to simulate what our defense was going to see offensively. Diaco told us several times before the game that AkSt was a good offensive team with a high level of play from their QB. IF we can stop Royce Freeman I think we will be okay against Oregon.

Also when it's all said and done, JD will set a couple return records for us. Kid has an extra gear that I can't wait to see unwind.

People need to quit posting and stop being worried about this team. In 6 days you will see what Diaco has done over the off-season, and you will realize that you've been duped.
We all hope you're right. There is reason for concern but I suspect we'll figure out as the year goes on that our D is better than it looked last night and AkSt is a much better team than most gave them credit for. When I listened to their coach's pre-game interview I knew they were going to have talent at WR and it showed. The question is how much better will our D be than it showed last night.

How are we supposed to get pressure on the opposing QB when 60% of their passes were him pivoting and chucking it to the sideline in less than 2 seconds? I honestly don't know what some of you saw and what you expect.

My biggest dissapoitment on D, as many others have mentioned, was the scheme in the first half, the mismatches with OLBs on slot players, our dbs playing too far off, and effectively having 2 v 1 within the first 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, which just let ASU dink and dunk their way up the field the entire first half.

Apart from that and the onside kick and the safety we gave up, I was pretty encouraged by what I saw, especially on offense.

1. Langsdorf is just not a good play caller , when we threw the ball on the very first play I thought oh great here we go. We can be gaining 10 yards a play on the ground but the first play that gets stuffed he then turns to the pass. He simply has no feel nor strategy to his calls, the only way to fix this is to fix him

Huh? We ran the ball for over 200 yards on 35+ carries; Lee put the ball in the air 32 times. Let's not try and latch onto a few trees here and ignore the forest. Langs is a good play caller. The biggest problem is his awareness at certain times during a game.

Pretty much sums it up for me. Any idea how of how much nickel we played? And yes, I like the throwing part. But It looked to me like Bryant can pull the load. Shorten the game.

Not sure.

Honestly though, if anyone thinks that's the defense we trot out for the rest of the year they're a moron. Diaco took a risk. Playing vanilla and save it all for Oregon. It almost cost us the game. But it didn't. So we wait and see what the defense looks like against Oregon.

It should also be noted that it felt incredible to watch a legit QB under center. Lee is very, very good. He is going to have a great year.
Agreed! Our offense showed flashes of what it will be this year. Going to get better and better.

As for the defense, I would just ask all on here not to panic based on one damn game. I remember in 98 when LA Tech passed for around 500 against the blackshirts. 98 ended up not being a great year by our standards of the 90's. But the defense was certainly not bad at all. I also remember a certain Culpepper dude in 97 from Central Florida who put a scare into that stellar defense.

It was ONE game. It was a very bad game defensively. But I think our defense has much better athletes than what they showed last night. They too will get better as the season goes on

Nebraska fans live to panic. I'd hate our fan base if I wasn't part of it.

In all honesty we all should be able to consider that the defense is going to have its ups and downs all season. That team is experienced and attacked a young group who had lost their all-American and leader teammate.

Defense is extremely young everywhere. I have zero doubt Diaco figures it out.

Not nearly enough. We should have been in nickel the whole game. They weren't hurting us with the run at all either.
