Disclaimer: This is not a bash thread. I love the twins, our team, and our coach. I'm just stating some of my observations. I welcome all discussion and debate.
These are my observations about our team during the break.
Twins looking for their offense first:
Coming out of the break Cal said he wanted the twins, especially Andrew, to assert themselves offensively. The issue is that when the twins look for there own offense they do it in such a way the take the rest of the team out of the flow of the game and stagnate our offense. This can be seen in nearly every game last year. This is do to the nature of their skill set. They like to do a lot of one-on-one. They catch the ball way out on the perimeter, size up their defender, attempt a drive, etc. 5+ seconds runoff the clock and our offense stagnates. This is specially true against a zone. We are much better when they operate within the flow of the offense.
Continue woes versus the zone defense:
It seems to me that Cal's teams, at lease since at UK, struggle against zone defenses. Year in and year out, our guards stand 25+ feet from the basket and pass it around the perimeter. At that distance we are not a threat to shoot or drive really. Its common knowledge that quick perimeter ball movement is effective at breaking a zone. However, this is only true if the perimeter players are a threat to drive or shoot. Playing at such a distance does not force the guards or wings of the zone to commit and thereby exposing holes in the zone. As such, they are able to pack down closing off driving and passing lines into the depth of their zone.
Our perimeter guys have to be more of a threat. A threat to shoot (whether we are hitting or not) or drive.
Ullis looks timid since the break:
Not sure the change, but he looks different to me. Ballsy big shot in double over time, however. I love this kids game and look forward to watching him play more.
Bigs being extremely weak with ball:
Again not sure source of this issue. However, our big are entirely to weak with the ball in traffic. Plain and simple, have to be better in this area.
*(Not new since the break) KAT is better facing the basket:
I don't know his percentage with that hook, but it can't be good.
Hate to agree with Gottlieb, but we are playing to slow:
Given our depth and athletic ability there is no reason for this. IMO, this is do mostly to our struggles against the zone. Slow passing around the perimeter and guys spending too much time sizing up opponents and setting up their own offense.
Booker/Lyles needs to be more of a focus:
Booker is ruthlessly efficient on the offensive end. Love Aaron, he provided us all with a lot of great memories, but our best offense is not through him. Our best offense is Booker and Lyles mid range game.
Lastly, get rid of the new tweak. Our guard play is much worse since the break.
