OFF Topic, but am I the only one lost on this Superbowl halftime show?

I do think that's partially true but not getting something shouldn't be an insult. Part of the reason people love what they do is because it just clicks with them or they really relate to it. There is a lot of music or art out there that I don't get and that's fine.

The issue is people who "don't get it" dismissing the music as talentless trash that isn't really music. Even if you don't get something you should be able to appreciate the art for what it is and acknowledge the talent it takes to make it.
I don’t call using racial slurs, talking about ho’s, talking about street violence, killing police, etc. “talent”. Maybe some do and that’s fine, but it won’t get my OK. And yes, I know all rap and hip hop isn’t like that but a good percentage is. I just don’t get it and fail to see that as art and I’m free to have that opinion. To each his own I guess.

It's performance art no different than movies like Scarface or the Godfather. For some reason white gangsters get a pass but black ones don't. I wonder why...

Not from me. I think they’re the same.
So you don’t consider TV shows like the Sopranos or movies like The Godfather to be art or take talent to make?

Or do you have trouble with the fact that Classic Rock is rife with men who raped and groomed children? Or that John Lennon was a horrible domestic abuser?

If we’re going to play the morality card that’s going to disqualify an absolutely boatload of musicians I’m sure you consider artists.

I mean it's maybe a little out of my favorite entertainment variety but I enjoyed it. To say humanity has regressed, I don't know about all that. What kind of entertainment did some of you enjoy back in the day?
Knights Jousting??
Jousting? What do you think we were? A bunch of squares? We were doing this - and it all went downhill since'

I’m talking about the product/music itself. Can you not get that through your head? You and a few others want to make this into something it’s not. You clearly have an agenda. You can discuss it with yourself.

If you are not going to “play the morality card,” then don’t play it ever. Right?

I agree that rap is performance art. I don’t agree that it is the same as a movie. In fact, we know Dre and Snoop were not just playing characters when they rapped, because Dre beat the crap out of women when he was younger and Snoop is a flat out misogynist. There is a huge difference between playing a character in a movie and rapping about the lifestyle you lived.

So, when it comes to Dre hurting women, I think it okay to take a position. And, likewise when Snoop talked about women, I know he was no man. I think he may know that now that he seems to respect his daughters and wife. But, that is not who he was.

All rappers are playing a character to an extent. It's all exaggerated. And yes, Dre's done some pretty bad things in the past. But if you have a problem with Dre's past you also need to have an issue with Steven Tyler for grooming a 14 year old, or Jimmy Page, John Lennon, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Ted Nugent, Marvin Gaye, and Iggy Pop. For some reason the people carrying on about how awful rappers are never seem to have an issue with those other musicians.

Am I the only one who didn’t care for the Prince halftime show. Just went back and watched it again and it still was trash.
I don't like his music, so since I figured I wouldn't like it, I elected not to tune in instead of watch it then come online and ***** about it and insult his craft.

So--doing WRONG is OK--because someone else did WRONG?

modern thinking--or is it?

Did I say it was okay for Dr. Dre to beat women because Steven Tyler raped a 14 year old? No. I said if you have a problem with Dr. Dre's past then you also need to have an issue with the past of countless older musicians or else you're being hypocritical and I would guess your issues with Dr. Dre aren't really due to his past you're just using that as an excuse. This isn't about excusing anyone's behavior, it's about viewing said behavior consistently.

I wasn’t griping or insulting him? What are you even talking about? Lol Everyone was saying how great it was so I went back to rewatch it and thought it was bad. Why does everyone get offended so easily anymore? Lol

Man. I’ve been reading Facebook comments on local news channel pages for the last hour or so.

Old people who look a lot like me have a lot of opinions on something many claimed they didn’t watch or wouldn’t watch. If rappers make these people this mad, we should have rappers every year. i find myself wondering if they’ll create a new genre when I’m old that I will fail to understand to the point I get irrationally pissed off about it on the internet. What if this new genre has profanity? I might die.

Who knew clean versions of very popular rap songs from 20+ years ago that permeated suburban America would be so controversial?

Thought Dre and Snoop were really good. Would have rather it just been them performing the whole show.

Why do we see so much of this comparative morality when liberals want to defend and justify disgusting crap?

If you DON’T have a problem with Dre’s past then just say so and stop with the silly ****.

Consistency is awesome. The dude who beats the crap out of women is a dick. I am consistent on that. I am also all for redemption. So, I accept that Dre today may not be the Dre from then (even if his and other’s rap glorified that crap).

But, when I see liberals trying to cancel Joe Rogan for his podcasts about COVID and the fact that he used a word when simply talking about the word, acting as if these are unforgivable sins, I would like consistency. If Joe must go, then the rapper who pushed women through doors and punched them in the face, should not be hero-worshipped during the Super Bowl halftime.

What the hell are you talking about? Not once did I mention Joe Rogan or canceling anyone. I'm also not the one who starting bitching about what rappers have done in the past. So I'm asking those people to apply their own beliefs consistently.

My only point in any of this is to tell the people who did start the pearl clutching to be consistent in their pearl clutching, because we both know they aren't. They use the "rappers are bad people" argument to dismiss the entire genre of music as a cover for their real feeling about the artists. If they were truly concerned about what Dre did in his past they would also be truly concerned with the past actions of countless classic rock artists. But they aren't, because they don't really care.

What they do care about is that rap is created by Black artists who they view as "thugs". They'll listen to their classic rock or country music and not give two craps about the personal actions of the artists because it's safe music created by safe white people who talk and dress in a manner they're comfortable with. They'll pretend to care about the actions of rappers as a front to justify their own racist feelings toward an entire genre of music.

There were way too many Afro Americans speaking jibberish up there and I couldn’t understand a gosh dern word of it; speak English! And then the one whitey up there has the audacity to kneel like that punk kaepernick. What in tarnation is going on with these kids these days? I was scared for the safety of the stadium staff as there’s no telling how many guns were on the field/stage during this “performance”.

Wow! You used all those words to say, "I'm an idiot". It's not about race, idiot. It's about ******** that poses as music. Same as the "bro country" of today. Trip on your dick to make it a racial thing, but admit that one black guy came up with a beat that hit, and everyone after him copied it.

Name me one "rap song" that is different than the others. Name me one black city that is different than the others. You can't.

I can tell you the difference in Boston and Queen.

Has to be one of the most ignorant things I've ever read. And then to say it's not a race thing but say all "black cities" are the same. You literally have no clue what you're talking about.

I'm not going to walk you through all the differences in rap music. But to think that Outkast is the same as Nas, or The Roots are the same as NWA, or that J Dilla is the same as DJ Premier is just ignorant. To think it's all the same is the same as saying there was no difference between The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd. I'm not saying you need to know the difference, but don't go spouting off about something you don't know about.

There are college courses on the history of hip hop and hip hop culture, just like there are on any sort of musical history. Don't just go dismissing it all as the same because you don't like it or don't know anything about it.

If you were truly curious as to how it's different just listen to a few songs by each of the above artists. The Roots is even a full live band providing the backing music. By no means am I saying you have to like it or even tolerate it, there's tons of music I dislike, but you can't listen to those different artists and think it's all the same unless you have already made up your mind.

Sorry man I just can't imagine having such a closed off outlook on life. What's the point if you're not living with an open mind and willing to learn and grow? The cool part about being wrong about something is that you learned something and I think we should all embrace that.

Whah..! I feel the same way about the new country music. Are you going to support it the same way? The vast majority of rap music appeals to people who have a double digit IQ. Same with bro country. Not racist at all. Just anti dumbass. Also, pro music.
