AP source: Cowboys pick McCarthy to replace Garrett as coach

A person with direct knowledge of the decision says the Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy have agreed on a deal for the former Green Bay coach to replace Jason Garrett.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the Cowboys haven't announced the hiring.

McCarthy interviewed over the weekend before the Cowboys had announced Garrett wasn’t returning. Garrett had an expiring contract coming off a make-or-break season that ended with Dallas missing the playoffs for the sixth time in his nine full seasons.

The 56-year-old McCarthy won a Super Bowl with the Packers on the Cowboys’ home field nine years ago. Green Bay made nine trips to the playoffs in his 13 years. McCarthy was hired in the middle of what ended up being a second straight losing season for the Packers in 2018.

Sounds like the delay in announcing Garrett's status was dependent on them being able to get the candidate they wanted.
If McCarthy or other candidates decided they weren't interested, Jerry could renew Jason without losing face (in Jerry's mind).

McCarthy is a solid hire. Not a homerun, but he can coach.
Who would be a home run, that would work for Jerrah Jones?

Apparently, he was who the Cowboys wanted. They were required to do two interviews. They got it done pretty quickly, as soon as they were eliminated.

Jerrah did as good as he could.

If I knew, I'd be on Jerrah's staff.

Joe Judge. That's your answer to the home run hire, and the freaking Giants just signed him.

38 yo and has coached under both Saban and Belichick. Been coaching in the pros since he was 34.

I don’t think so. Garrett had been part of the Cowboys for a very long time. 25+ years. I think he allowed Jason to exit gracefully, no firing etc. When Jason had told everyone so long & Good Bye he released an announcement praising him and Thanking him. It had to be a difficult situation. He knew he had to let him go so he allowed the contract to basically expire w/o a renewal. I recognize that JERRY has his detractors but in this case, I think it was handled well.
