No one ever calls an objection in the Derby,” Baffert told me Sunday afternoon, by text. “It’s always a roughly run race. Twenty-horse field. I have been wiped out numerous times, but that is the Derby. I can see by the book why they did it. But sometimes you’ve got to take your ***-kickings with dignity.

That’s Bob Baffert, per KSR.

I’ve been reading all weekend that the only people unhappy with the DQ are the rubes who don’t know anything about the sport. I don’t care either way, but this does humor me a little.....

And for the record, I do think the Derby has to be judged differently if for no other reason than the 20 horse field which will absolutely make it a rough and tumble race annually.

This is pretty much what my cousin told me (who won over 1200 races in his career, fwiw) When you have 4 lightly raced horses trying to squeeze in a spot for 2, then **** happens, especially in the slop on a turn at 35 mph and on a 1200 Lb animal.

The last thing I want to see is a horse/jockey pileup. I understand the concept of staying in your lane, to prevent such an event. We came close to it Saturday IMO.

Yeah but that's the thing with ppl pretending they are concerned with safety - if you are dont allow so many horses in the race, dont run on sloppy tracks, dont run two huge races within 2 weeks of each other, etc

I like baffort weighing in, especially since he had nothing to gain by doing so.

^ Great point about claiming to care about safety.

“There could’ve been a pile up”
We put 20 horses out there on a muddy track.

And Bob Baffert agrees with your cousin, every jockey that ever rode in the Derby says it is a very rough race . . . . look up Brokers Tip in the 1933 Derby, very famous picture, it has always been that way, which is why there has never been a DQ in 145 years before Saturday.

All I can tell you is that I personally do not want to see a pileup. I also do not believe there should be no rule enforcement just because it's the Derby.

Jockeys whipping each other, the other horse, and trying to hold on to each other's reins in 1933 Derby won by Brokers Tip
