Are there going to be any male athletes at this Olympics? It seems like the NBC promos only have female athletes. It reminds me of the days of Uncle Lar’s Oglympics posts.

I still enjoy the Olympics and watching events that I don’t think about again for 4 years. Especially XC skiing (those guys are aerobic machines) and whatever it’s called where they ski and target shoot. The hockey has been spectacular, both men and women. Perfect timing so something keeps me interested until the first Spring Training game and the sound of bat meeting ball.

Have they finished the hockey arena? That was a big concern only a few weeks go?

Love Milan BTW, very walkable, lots of fascinating history, art, cafes, etc. etc. etc.

Yeah, Milan’s nice. Great art museum, plus The Last Supper. It was terribly crowded when we visited in October, can’t imagine what it would be like now.

Hockey, curling, and snowboarding on tap today.

USA 5-1 Czech Republic in women’s hockey, nice match. (I was working on split exact sequences while watching the match, a bonus.)

Snowboarding coming up. In my experience, this can be spectacular.

Please use this thread for all discussion of the 2026 Winter Olympics (Milano Cortina Olympics).

I need to watch For Your Eyes Only again for a Cortina refresher.

From what I heard, the ice will be (just barely) ready but attendance might have to be restricted because of unfinished construction.

Watching the USA v Czechia and attendance doesn’t seem to be restricted on the side opposite the cameras.

Biathlon = Greatest, most relevant, historical-based sport of all time.

For me, this still ranks as one of the great moments in Winter Olympic history. Frank Gifford on the call. 50 years ago today.

One of the most incredible sports moments I’ve ever watched. Then I got to read about it when SI hit the mailbox.

I would add Heiden’s races and of course the 1980 hockey win as awesome inspiring.

I've watched that run dozens of times. And it never gets old. I watched it live (or tape delay; I forget) in '76, and was just in disbelief at what I was watching. Klammer was a heck of a downhill racer, but that eclipsed even his normally high standards.

Women’s downhill training runs right now. Lindsay Vonn took it easy going down, hard to say how she’s going to do.

Foggy as hell on the mountain.

It has been a great morning of curling and skating so far.

Pairs and women’s figure skating today, mostly. The wife is psyched. Opening Ceremonies at 13:30 ET, NBC.

I love the Olympics and always end up watching some events that I would normally not have any interest in. However, you’d have to pay me some serious money to watch the opening or closing ceremonies. They make royal weddings and poker tournaments seem like the 100m dash by comparison.

Watching the opening ceremony and parade of athletes - my favorite part of the Games. We get very few opportunities at this scale to show as a representation/microcosm of our global population and the smiles and excitement is so great to see. That said still bitter about Eileen Gu….🤬
