At the Galax vs FC game. Galax ran a play that ended up being close enough to a first down to measure. Instead of moving the chains to midfield to measure. The official picked up the ball and carried it to the sideline to measure. I have never seen this in all my years watching football. Has anyone ever seen this before, and is it a legit way to measure?

I have seen this happen before but I'm 99% sure that's the wrong move. Was the game at FC or Galax?
I'm noticing I see a lot let measurements with more turf fields and when a field is well marked. You still see some to appease everyone but most of the time they need to get to a line or tick mark for a 1st and if the ball is touching that mark it's a first.

It was at Galax. You make a very ggod point about measuring on a turf field.

I have seen them pick up the ball and then measure half a dozen times over the years here in our area. It drives me crazy because it defeats the whole purpose for measuring. You know there is no way in the world they could guarantee that they were walking exactly in a straight line from where the ball was spotted.

The only way that would be legit is if the mark was made on the sideline where the runner ran out of bounds. The ref can hold the mark and wait to see if there will be a measurement at which point they would take the ball to him. I am assuming that is not what happened, and I have seen the ball moved from the initial spot and then a measurement taken, which is absolutely wrong.

The head Ref has been doing this for many years. I was at the game and said WTF

The ball was ran a little to the right of the middle of the field toward the home sideline. They picked up the ball and walked it all the way across the field to the chains on the sideline.it gave us a first down and it looked like it was good couple feet short. Lol

Why don't you post this question on the "ask the officials" thread? White Hat and the others over there are the best to get accurate answers from.
