Apparently, Rece values the "wow" moments more than the "character and integrity" part the Heisman winner is supposed to embody, and he may also be a poor judge of character based on this vote and his revelation that he voted for Bush twice.
While my memory is admittedly not what it once was, I don't recall hearing a lot of regrets after the DAC reversed their position and gave back the trophy they stripped from Bush for taking illegal payments... and their reason was because players are
now getting paid legally. I wasn't aware the rules could be applied retroactively.
The lack of consistency regarding ethics and character from so many players, voters and members of the club presenting the award is appalling and the primary reason why it hasn't held much meaning for me for quite a while - the Bush reversal being the final straw.
Either stand for something... or don't.
