Game 1 Bottom Line:

-Colandrea is exactly who we thought he would be. Better fit than Dylan and it's not close.

-Running backs will be fine. Rule and Nelson run hard.

-O line wore them down, but not dominant.

-Some of the guys that needed to take a leap were non factors or were a net negative. (Carter N, Nwernari, Clark, Rex, Charles, to name a few)

-Defense was average or better after the first drive. Appeared Charles blew the opening play, but not 100%.

-D line lacks pass rusher difference makers again. Jones x2 flashed a bit along with Whittington.

-Linebackers were solid overall. Merritt needs to play more. Chambliss will only make that unit better.

-Special Teams - lacked details -- penalties, running backwards, almost allowing a punt block...

Will take the win and cover. Hopefully this team are the guys who played and coached the 2nd half.

Defense adapted well after the bad start...that is a good sign and shows that there are adults in the defensive room. I thought Colandrea would look good against the pay 2 win teams. His lack of size and our lack of interior run game and deep passing game will show up against the big 10, as will our small defensive front. Should be a fun month though similar to the last few seasons

They were switching between mainly rushing the passer or playing contain. Obviously they guessed wrong quite a few times.

I thought I heard that they eventually put a spy on the QB to try to limit what he could do if he did get past the line of scrimmage. I do not think NU was doing anything exotic to limit the Ohio QB. And that kid really made some plays so hats off to him. The fact that they played a quarterback who was good enough to be effective was a good thing as opposed to clubbing somebody come right out of the gate.

They did use various Linebackers to spy, but it was later in first half when it started. Poulus ran past or through them several times. We even had #1 a down lineman spy on a play or 2 which is very different. Better than sticking with what wasnt working. Lots of different pressure packages also-4 wasnt getting it done.

The lowest graded OL starters were the new transfer guards. Hopefully more game experience will improve their play.
The transfer LB from Oregon State was good in the hole but not in space.
From what I've read we have spent a fair amount on the DL but it doesn't look like it. I will say that as undersized DT's go, I like Whittington over Davis from last year.
PS - Let's get the ball to Hunter a few more times per game.

I guess a spy could be considered a designated mirror, which he may consider a different thing than say Whittington (who is very quick is short space) taking a couple steps upfield and then checking the QB. It's clear they were trying to keep a better eye on the kid.

Most of the power runs seemed to go to the right side. Agree with Black being much better in the run game than pass.

Congrats to Gottula who probably played his best game as a Husker. I'm still skeptical after his turnstile issues from last year, but appearing healthy and improved footwork stood out.

If Geep is half as good as some claim, then he should be able turn around one or more of our pre-existing lineman and make them better. Perhaps Gottula is one of them. Just improved footwork can help a lot.

Gottula got a bad rap last year. He was trying to gut it out with an injury because his backup was a big drop off. We saw it could get worse when the trainers finally pulled the plug on his season.

It is something many of us were pointing out in the offseason as a reason for concern but were told that we were just being negative Nellies by some on here. But we just need to admit that we are going to lose a lot of games this year precisely because we cannot rush the passer. If we can't get pressure against the Ohio offensive line we sure as hell are going to struggle to do so in the B1G.

Let's face it. We are a lower echelon team in the B1G and we will stay in that cellar until somebody knows how to recruit and pay for top end defensive lineman. And our offensive line isn't much better. Games are still won in the trenches. And that is where we are the weakest.

And of course our best defensive player is out with an injury (Chambliss). Of course he is. It is what Nebraska football excels at these days. Bad luck. Rhule says he may not play this Saturday again. Which means he won't.

Well they didn't in the first qtr. they DID throughout the game as mentioned earlier...

but , after further thought and given Rhule's knowledge of Defensive, I could see why he didn't see that. Of course, he is not used to seeing adjustments being made by his staff either.

Mostly agree, Possibly with more time and reps the OL will improve. Our skill guys on offense are pretty good. They spent money to get a QB, we'll have to see how he performs against Big 10 athletes. LB and DB's pretty good but I think we are a bit thin at DB. Marshall & Jones are good, Conn seems to be pretty good after not seeing much of him last year, and I guess McDougal is decent. After that, big drop off. Maybe the outlook changes through year with the a new defense but if you believe Chat GPT, we are paying some of the DL a hefty amount for limited results.

Not having your best LB for the opener is less than ideal, but Merritt getting more reps and producing will serve the D well in league play.
