UNC's final AP ranking in Banghart's tenure:
2020: UR
2021: UR R64
2022: #17 S16
2023: #20 R32
2024: UR R32 (all scholarship 1&2 guards but one out injured)
2025: #12 S16
2026 #13 S16
2027 preseason ranking was #12
It is pretty polarizing on this board whether that is acceptable or not. The progression is slow, though many fans feel they see continued promise for more gains, if not clear progress.
But it does not compare at all to the achievements of UNC MBB the last 7 years: the men finished the season ranked once and had a magical run to the NCAA final as an unranked team another year. So two total S16 appearances. For the rest an unranked team either was eliminated first round or missed the tournament completely.
It is estimated that UNC's player budget is roughly in the #20-25 range likely, though such reports are very unreliable. But it is certainly not a top 10 team.
The perennial powers like UConn, UofSC, TX. LSU, USC probably have 3X our budget. They have teh freedom to fill their entire roster with top 15 players, then see who emerges and who flushes out. A team like UNC needs every single top tier recruit to be a hit; no misses.
