You can still have a stagnant possession without running a lot of shot clock. Even that last possession that Akot scored on...

Kelly dribbled the entire time (almost lost it). Made one pass to Akot. Akot dribbled more than a handful of times and threw a shot up. No movement off the ball.

That's a very typical possession for a CB team.
I think there's certainly criticisms to be made of the offensive design, but I can't help but be struck by how many decent looks this program has consistently missed over the years. There were multiple points when Indya and Ustby would consistently miss layups. Laila clearly has a huge mental block in any game of importance. Reniya has been anything but consistent since her all acc season. I feel like we're not repping the shots that players will take in the flow of the offense enough. Nyla and Sophie have missed a ton of open shots today

If we are talking about the same play, It was an iso play for Akot to back down a smaller defender. Smart play on any level of basketball.

Are we playing well today? No, we are not. Just disagreeing with the point you made.

That Burrows possession is exactly what I'm talking about. Get a good look at a corner 3 which I assume is the play design but she doesn't look at all comfortable shooting it and then gets so in her head she misses an easy kickout and smokes two layups

"Future star"?

Seems a bit hyperbolic.

That last sentence I agree with somewhat. We are just giving up a lot on the glass.
6ft 5in and athletic is extremely rare in women's basketball. Today and last exhibition I see good instincts, good hands, decent footwork, and touch around the rim. Bofia has the tools to be a top tier ACC player in the future. Will she get there? Time will tell.

Oklahoma being braindead the last few minutes has helped us. Doubt it will matter, but their speeding the game up for us makes zero sense.

She usually has us well coached defensively, we look awful on that end. I think that’s worse than the offense personally.
agreed. We lost some really good defenders from last season. In game one we certainly do not looking ready to match last season without missing a beat. OK is #3 in scoring offense last year. It is a great test, but not a test we are passing.

I am sure we will love Harpring as the year progresses...but 26 shots is way too many. A terribly inefficient game for her. We need better to get to where we hope to get to.

The last time UNC allowed 90 or more point sin a game was Feb 2020 vs Boston College.

The most points we have allowed in any game the last three years is 78 points.

We got run.

So no one is gonna say how bad Harpring played? She is very suspect with her handle and awareness of defense attacking her. Those turnovers were really bad
I mean she wasn't great but I have far more patience for her as freshman in her first game than I do for Reniya, who didn't do anything until the game was out of hand, or Laila and Cardy, who were unplayable.

Definitely. If you are going to take over 1/3rd of you team's shots it better be close to a 50% adjusted FG efficiency. 9 of 26 (2-7) is not going to cut it. And I believe 7 turnovers is the most by a Tar Heel since Ustby's infamous triple double a few years ago. 5 assists is great, but 5:7 A:TO ratio is a problem.

White fouls out in 17 minutes played. 10 points, 5 rebounds 2 asstists is pretty solid. Was matched on Chavez some and held her own.
She reminds me of McPherson the very few times we saw her play: 100 MPH all the time, be that good or bad, lol.

SMH wow First game of the season or not. Saw this in the two exhibition games. No offensive sets. Cross half court, give the ball to Harpering and let her try and make something happen. Reminds me of Deja Kelly days. Toooo many players hanging out around the three point line waiting for the pass. Its crazy that it seems Kate always battling for the rebounds. Where are the bigs. Achol needs to stay in the paint. She also needs to learn to go straight up for the shot and not try and make ten moves on every shot attempt before she finally shoots. Gabby Wms, Renya, and Kate all three do not need to be on the floor at the same time. Bofia looks the most athletic of anyone. Yet she sits. Bofia and Achol need to keep their butts in the paint and play two guards and a true small forward around them. Go back to old school basketball. Ive decided the coaching staff's assessments of their own players and their abilities is waaay off. Maybe get better practice players for them to face. Blanca love her as a person. But Bofia needs her minutes at this point. Also worry if Brooks is supposed to be our second best player. Then we def in trouble. She for sure is a good wide open shooter. But cant drive and finish and has a hard time getting open as well as looked like a liability on defense tonight. Oh well. Unfortunately Another beat down on national TV on the horizon. UGGH hate that. We really need to take advantage of our time on ESPN and show the nation we are legit.

In the few minutes Blanca got to play I thought her size helped. She should have played more. We need a traditional big and when/if Toomey comes back she is not really a five either.

The surprise emergence of LeeLee Bell makes this Oklahoma team potentially top 10. They had 3 legit weapons today and this is even with Chavez on the bench a lot and Stewart not having a good game.

That is, unless our defense made them look better than they are. But I suspect they are really good.

Conversley, UNC does not look like a top 10 team. The two questions coming into this season were our ability to play UNC level defense yet again with Grant, Harris and Nivar gone (all plus defenders) and to find new 3 pt shooters. In game one at least that did not happen.

Reasons for optimism:
-The defense will get better. If I trust our staff on one thing, it's that
-We do have talent. KH was bad today, but will be better. Burrows showed me something. Bofia has a world of potential. White can defend. Reniya may not get back to all ACC level but if she can start playing a bit less tight she'll be good
-Missing CT. Need her to come in at a high level

Reasons for pessimism:
- We have a lot of shooters. I don't know that we have many makers
-Neither Reniya nor Kate look comfortable off the ball
-Even with CT back, I don't think we have the bulk down low.
-We're going to start 0-2. Might be able to scare SC a bit by pressuring the ball but we will get crushed on the boards

Harpring- 9.0 alone, nobody else
Burrows- 6.5 Maybe >
Brooks- 6.5 maybe >
White-4.5 unimpressed at all, maybe <
Akot- 6.5 maybe >
Thomas- 0 , uninvited
Other transfers, bench- 4.0 ???
Toomey- please
Hall- no
Coach- ??- talk; today showed still at the fight with spoons. No knife, no fight, team turn tail, just spoons.

It has felt like AA has been kind of lost in everything. Both in terms of having an impact and being out of position to make a real impact around the rim. Somehow she had 11 pts and 8 rebounds today but can’t remember a play that felt intentional for her except for running the floor and getting the pass from KH opening minutes. The middle ball screen pick and rolls have been non existent and sometimes the 4 and 5 were tripping up one another.

TQ also did not have much impact this game or the MD game. She’s great on defense but we’re going to need 20 pts and 15 rebounds minimum from our starting 4 and 5.

Too many of the awkward 50/50 balls around the rim (mostly thanks to our misses) went to OK. It was like our team was not in position to control the ball.

I agree with the group that RK has not been strong enough on offense or defense to warrant 33 minutes on the floor. She’s still hesitant and indecisive with the ball in her hands and her only points were when she was either wide and had plenty of time (mostly at the end) or off a pass from someone else. I personally like KH playing the 1 when they’re in together. But I still think GW deserves more minutes and that we can run taller line ups with NB at the 2.

Curious what CB’s diagnosis is beyond the obvious turnovers and missed bunnies. There’s more to it than that.

Not looking forward to the tough schedule in front of us.

I'm going to disagree on those ragging Reniya Kelly. 4 of 10 shooting (2-6) a 7:1 A:TO is a workman-like, above average performance. .

And she drew the Chavez assignment the most today, and held the national freshman of the year mostly in check. Yes, Chavez certainly had the better game of the two, but that is to be expected.

Kelly was not our biggest problem by any means. If you were expect her to carry the team, then no, that did not happen. But did anyone think she was going to be the go to player this year?

Sahara Williams marked Harpring mostly and vice versa. Williams won that matchup , scoring the same amount on 11 less shots a a 4:2 A:TO ratio. Williams is a really good player; we know she would do well. 2X Cheryl Miller SF nominee.

If it is any consolation, this will be one of the better guard tandems we will see this season.

Lots to fix but it’s literally November 2nd yall… are we going to mention we started 5 players that didn’t start for us in our last game last year??? Kate is a freshman and is going to be really good. Burrows played her first game at UNC and was presumably a little injured before this game. Kelly was out most of last year and also had really good moments. Idk. Hate to lose this one but we will be OKAY. Bummer that Bell couldn’t miss or else we would’ve won this game. Holding Chavez to 10 points was big. White played well and was all over it defensively. AGAIN, Basically an entire new team from last year. Now we might most likely start 0-2 but playing better competition early will help us later in year. Oklahoma will be better than people thought and will also help is later in the year.

<removed> everyone on this board is here to support the team no? We weren’t playing Pitt or BC and lost. OU played in the S16 last year and had the best Freshman returning. <removed by moderator>
