What’s the ratio of paper umbrella to whip cream to booze in an old fashioned?

0/1

I keep rye's on hand for old fashions.

In an odd occurence, buckethead made a good post. Old Forrester is fine for an OF. I don't bother with any muddled crap. Whiskey, simple sugar, Angustura bitters. A little ice.

Best bourbon for under $100 to make them?

All of them.

ymmot31 knows.

Rye is a better choice for Old Fashioned.

I put sliced oranges and cherries in a quart jar with rye for a couple of days, then add some simple syrup and bitters in there the day of.

Bitters. I've had tobacco bitters in them. Should i get several types of bitters?

I prefer manhattans and bulleit is my go to, sometimes knob creek. The proper cherry is also important - a nice, pruned, dark red maraschino.

There seems to be a shortage of Buffalo Trace in the NY area.. A lot of places can't get it and are desperate to grab some bottles. I've always thought BT is the best low-mid level brand that's generally accessible in stores.

For Old Fashioned's, I switch over to Blackberry for the winter. Sometimes with the orange and cherry, sometimes replacing it.

Try Noah's Mill bourbon. It's got a unique taste and makes a great OF.
Gotta give props to ghorn; @ 15 years ago several of us met before a UK football game and we each brought our favorite bourbons. He brought Noah's Mill and, IMHO, it's one of the best I've ever had.

Rittenhouse BIB or Old Overholt BIB. Those have been the classic choice for Old Fashions for decades. Why mess with a good thing?
