When my son was in college in Oregon we took a pork roll to him. Got picked out as possible bomb material by X-ray. TSA guy told us that block of cheese or pork roll will look suspicious. Pork roll did make it out to Portland ok

Can confirm. I put sticks of pepperoni in my shoes to save space once and TSA took me aside. "Sir, why is there a salami in your shoe?" they asked. They focused more of the "things in your shoes" aspect than the "log of organic material" aspect though
