As a bitter old man I often yearn for the good old days when players were there for four years actually three year of varsity games.I then start thinking that there was only one game per week on, remember Sail With the Pilot.My favorite player of all time is Bobby Verga. I saw him play probably 15 to 20 games over his career as opposed to seeing BI play over 30 times last year.So were the good old days actually better.FWIW IMO these kids would be crazy not to become millionaires as soon as possible.Can an old dog learn new tricks

Yeah, there is a lot of appeal in the getting to know players and watching them develop as players and men, but as Dylan said, the times, they are a-changin'. Fortunately they are still sprinkled in there, like guys like Quinn Cook and Marshall Plumlee. It was very gratifying watching their journeys.
Under the circumstances, I have no problem with the way K has embraced the era. He is getting short-term guys, but they are still "Duke guys." To use K's phrase, they "unpack their bags," even for just one year. They represent the University the right way. Look no further than Ingram's recent goodbye letter. We haven't seen a Ben Simmons-type one-and-done at Duke.

If I were good enough at anything to be able to make that much and not have to go to college for it, I think I would in a heartbeat. I think that's the dream for these guys. I don't have a problem with OADs as long as they actually want to be here for the time they are required to put in. If they are just a "hired gun/mercenary" then I'm not that interested.

One thing that has happened, that maybe as little as 7 years ago, people never would have agreed with it that people are now at least understanding why these kids leave early. There was a time when a kid leaving early might result in that fan base turning their back on him. In '04, I remember Deng being "excused" for leaving early because of his family's persecution...but only because of that. I believe the phrase used to be thrown around "instant gratification". And it's understandable, because it was so new. Now it's almost expected. I am glad how open minded fans have become about the whole thing.
It's no secret to how I love 4 year guys but like dj said the times are different. If things were like they were before players could enter early there is no way with the talent as good as it is now would work. Looking at Duke as an example we would have Parker, Hood, Jahlil, Justin, Ty, Allen, Kennard, Ingram, Jeter, Matt, Amile, Giles, Jackson, Vrank, Tatum whoops I'm over the scholarship limit which is why it wouldn't work. There would however be a lot more top notch teams out there with a chance of winning the national championship. There is where the greater coaching would come in and we've got the G.O.A.T. of course. Really I do think great young talent along with 4 or 5 juniors and seniors give teams the best shot at a title. OFC.
Speaking of Sailing With The Pilot on the game of the week does any of the old farts remember the NCSU/unc game when bill chamberlain was having an awesome game. There was a foul and Chamberlain took his place on the lane line. NCSU Coach Norm Sloan sent in sub "Dirty Dan" Wells and Wells stepped in right beside chamberlain, turned his head toward chamberlain, said something to chamberlain and chamberlain then slugged Wells. chamberlain got tossed and I can't remember for sure but I think NCSU may have won the game with chamberlain out. Always wondered what Wells said to him. OFC.
Remember like yesterday Sky....It was bizarre and whatever "Dirty Dan" said, BAM!!! Chamberlain went off!!! Never forget it and yes I believe State went on to win the game...I hated UNC just as much then as I do now!

Even Mid-Majors are having difficulties keeping their best players for 4 years. The guys that graduate after their junior season tend to transfer out and seek immediate eligibility. And then you have cases like UNC-Asheville that had two stud-freshman that blew up during the season - and now there are a lot of schools interested in their services. Dwayne Sutton is heading to Louisville and Dylan Smith is bound to end up at some high-profiled school. Can't blame them, they'll get more exposure and opportunities having games nationally televised and playing against better competition.
