When I was a junior, our two best wrestlers were 119 and 126 (in fact, the only two kids to have ever made states from the school at the time, although others have since). I was 133 or 135 or whatever the next weight was. One of the seniors on the team who was pretty good cut to 112. It was brutal. He was skinny and weak and I could rag doll him in practice. He passed out at practice one day and ended up hospitalized for dehydration. He came back a week later 20 pounds heavier, which was simply no longer malnourished and dehydrated - not really even bulked up in terms of muscle gain, and just destroyed me in a challenge match. This was in the 80s long before descent plans and healthy weight loss was a thing at all.My teammates and I found there were basically two outcomes with Ex-lax. I found out that it stops working, certaintly has diminishing returns. Took a box, lost 10 pounds (did get yelled out by my father for tying up the bathroom for an hour). Second time lost like 4 pounds, etc. Had a teammate who for about 6 months need Ex-Lax to take a dump, had to wean his way off of it.
I will admit, losing 10 pounds by sitting on my *** was almost as great a day as when I got a Big Wheel when I was five years old. Thought I found the Holy Grail, alas not to be.
When your kids are young do not let them lose weight. When they get older, high school age, do not let them drop more than one weight class. For me senior year of high school, weighed 162, dropped to 155, not a problem, cut out the junk food, working out/wrestling 15 hours a week. The drop to 145 was absolutely brutal. Don't let your kids do that.
Are you referring to the James Martin who won a national title for Penn State in 1988? If so yeah I’d say he was pretty good. He’s a Dr (orthopedic) in State College.Had a kid like that on my HS team. Had to drink water at times to make the minimum weight. His name was Jim Martin. Now it’s Dr. James Martin.
That has to be Echemendia. He's from Cuba.Don't know that. But interestingly, a Cuban wrestler at Iowa State filed suit yesterday against the NCAA contending that the NCAA improperly started his five year window while in Cuba. This is not a class action but could impact other non U.S. athletes who lost years for time spent outside NCAA institutions.
Batisda? That has to be Echemendia. He's from Cuba.
Any kid from the 70's knows that it is 3. The owl said so!How many licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop? We will never know, it’s been discussed forever with no final determination.
Nope. He wrestled 1 year in HS in Arizona, and is in his 6th year of college. That has to be Echemendia. He's from Cuba.
For the Google-impaired:
Reineri Andreu Ortega (New Lawsuit): A Cyclone RTC wrestler, he's suing the NCAA because his five-year eligibility clock started while he was in a post-high school institution in Cuba before moving to the U.S. in 2023, which he argues is unfair
Gotta hand it to Dresser, if there is a place that is advantageous to his squad, he's gonna "go there."Dude is 27 and wrestled all over the world for the past decade. This can't be taken seriously.
I do not know that to be a fact yet. But if you're looking for open tournaments that could fit his desire to compete in one in January, off the top of my head you have the Scuffle, F&M Open, and Bloomsburg Open, if memory serves.Getting back to the original topic, does anyone know for sure if Ono is going to be entered in the Southern Scuffle?
How many of us were asking ourselves whether Cornell has a Cuban wrestler?Gotta hand it to Dresser, if there is a place that is advantageous to his squad, he's gonna "go there."
Angling for 11th yr SR money from Slumlord Bob.Dude is 27 and wrestled all over the world for the past decade. This can't be taken seriously.
Yeah but isn't he 30? ;-)That has to be Echemendia. He's from Cuba.
I think I differ on about all of this. It was a life changing move for Ono to come here and he reps Penn State pretty much on every single social media post. The way some posters talk on here you’d think PSU kidnapped the kid and he’s trying to escape. I’m also of the belief that Cael, though usually low maintenance is prepared to take this as far as it needs to go to get Ono additional years, even if that means sueing the NCAAYeah, the NCAA seems to be screwing Ono and PSU on this one, and I believe there are other examples as well.
That said, I remain exceedingly skeptical we would be able to keep Ono content in state college for more than just next season. The following would certainly be gravy, but then two more ..?
Don't even ask what multiple more seasons would mean in terms of impact on the roster and how Cael juggles that one. I am sure he would figure it out, but even two years of Ono as a starter would almost certainly mean we lose two to four of some someone else very very good.
Some things are just so good you have to sit back and enjoy the roses while you can. I think next season will be it, and how great will it be? I can't wait.

Quick -- somebody alert the PSU Baseball coach that Japanese student-athletes aren't gonna stick around for more than 2 years. That said, I remain exceedingly skeptical we would be able to keep Ono content in state college for more than just next season.

Something tells me the guy who kicked the crap out of both Vito and Uguev will squeeze his way into the lineup. What if Ono never makes it into a logjammed 133-141?
How much would you pay to see Ono and Blaze go at it?
I would absolutely love to see it again though. I think Blaze has jumped levels since this but I’m sure a huge part of that is practicing with Ono every day. He has spoken extremely highly of Ono in every interview I’ve seen
Poor Ono…. Kid can’t stand the thought of being here more than 1 year and can’t even make the lineup for that year lolWhat if Ono never makes it into a logjammed 133-141?
And the cow, the fox, the turtle didn't know either, only the owl. (Happy memories). Can I get my banana seat bike back and "pop a wheelie" without killing myself, Mr, Owl?

But did you have a twisted chrome sissy bar?My banana seat was purple metal flake. Fat 2” slick on the rear. Too cool.
Then i would say we have the world's best 133 and 141. At least in folkstyle. What if Ono never makes it into a logjammed 133-141?
