Maybe I saw Ono’s match different than most but I thought he wrestled a pretty strategic match. He took what Davino offered and didn’t place himself in a position where Davino could come even close to getting to his legs. RAF matches are individuals matches, not team events. No need to run up the score or take unnecessary chances when the goal is simply to win and avoid injury.
Right… he was stronger and did all he needed to do to get the W, according to freestyle scoring.

…in folkstyle, the same action would have led them scoreless into overtime… none of the push outs or the activity point would have warranted a stall call on Davino…

…and I believe Ono would have shot and scored in SV, if he hadn’t already in regulation… I don’t think he’d be inclined to take his chances in ride out.

Here's another thing, Davino is a very very good opponent. It's actually crazy how underrated he gets these days.

He beat Jax at the US Open before losing to Marcus. When he got teched by Jax the second time, he clearly got concussed (his head collided with Jax's knee)

He more or less beat Arsen Harutyunyan, the last exchange was completely scored incorrectly and if it was scored correctly, Davino wins.

Other than that one Japanese title he wrestled where everyone seemed overmatched, that was a heck of a return match on a large stage.

Ono has to 2 questions, but really only against the elite guys.

How does he do in scrambles?
Can he get away on bottom?

I don't think it's too early to put him in that top 3conversation. But Jax and Seidel are scramble monsters and hammers on top.
I don't know if he can beat either Seidel or Jax cause there is the scramble factor. But Ono will have fulfilled all my expectations for him if he gets off bottom from either of them and smiles and winks at them after doing so.

From every indication from the room, he has no problem on bottom but isn't good on top. If he can escape at will AND he can not be taken down while also being elite at scoring from neutral, he can win a NC

Everyone seems to forget...there IS scrambling in freestyle! More now than ever. He is elite on his feet and elite at finishing...I have no worries.

Eh. The scrambling in Folk versus Free is night and day. The ability to roll across your back unpenalized and grab joints is not a thing in Free. It's going to be far more frustrating than you think for Ono to score. And against Jax, Davino or Seidel? whoo buddy.

He's certainly in the right room though. So it's going to be interesting.

I worry about the scrambling the most with Ono. He's too quick and too powerful for getting out to be a huge issue IMO, but the scrambling in folk is definitely a different level than it is in free.

Seidel beating Blaze was the most folkstyle win ever.

Strong ride out and his takedown on Blaze was off a roll through his back (after Blaze got his leg) that Blaze was not ready for (and Blaze obviously is very adept in folk)

This exactly.
What if Ono wins a title by going total Iowa style from quarters onward. Don't shoot at all, handfight and shove them out of bounds enough to win 2-1 in SV off stalls.

I joked about that when I saw his RAF match but if it works ...

Ono will be fine at folk style, he strong quick and a great athlete. He will figure it out and be a threat in March at 133.

Given the comments from the room, I’m thinking Ono is trolling these opponents. Seems like he’s collecting easy money.

Yeah, if we see the human wrecking ball he was against Vito, we’ll get a lot of speed of light backtracking like your last bit in quotes.

Imagine the glee for us if he goes out and puts a good opponent in a bow and arrow.
Surprisingly, I saw Yoshida try a bow and arrow in one of his U20 matches,

The best chance to take Ono down is a folk scramble off his shot. But I almost feel Ono will exclusively look to avoid those since he controls the match always.

I've seen Ono give up one takedown at 61 ... to Blaze in the last 1-2 seconds of their match and Ono at that point didn't look interested in fighting it since he was up 7-0 (if he was up 2-0 only, he puts up more resistance)

Uguev, Vito, Spencer I don't know if they touched his leg even.

There is only one way to beat Ono: Somehow get away with only getting dinged for stalling once, somehow avoid getting taken down, and take top and pray for a minute riding time.

This includes Jax. Nobody is taking Ono down, freestyle, folk style, any style.
We dont know how he is at holding someone down or getting off of bottom yet. I am 100% confident that he is facing the best of the best in the room... so even if we dont know? Cael and company know, IF Ono is adequate in those positions... he will be difficult to not have in the lineup this year bc you cannot beat him on the feet!

As someone who did both, albeit at nowhere near the same level ... I found it much harder to adapt to freestyle from folk than vice versa. I vividly remember a team mate who travelled 22 hours to Fargo, rolled across his back as if he were still doing folk (mental lapse no doubt nerves) and gave up a touch fall thus ending his tournament before it really got started.

He’s an elite and disciplined athlete who has been training in the absolute best room in the world for over a year. Think of who his partners are… insane.

He’s more than a threat at 133/141. You’ll see. Davino is a champ. Marcus is a champ. Lee is a champ. He beats them all at FS. Yes there are nuances in folkstyle that he has to learn but he is going to be so exciting to watch and will be an immediate fan favorite if he goes. Opponents will be running from him.

Ono just beat Nico in the room.

Still lots of banter (both Cael and Nolf) about, "I don't know if we will see Ono start this season"?

It's such a curious take. An athlete that elite should be pretty darn good at mat wrestling by now, and just with the 3 point TD and catch and release alone, one would think he was good enough out of the gate last year, with very little Folkstyle training, to be a top 4 guy.

I have no delusions that Desmond can beat him in a wrestle off. Might Marcus be able to take him in Folk with that world class defense, and likely superior mat wrestling skills? Maybe, maybe more than maybe.

Is Ono satisfied with just ceeding the position to Nate to be a good team guy, enjoy his time at Penn State and the process? Maybe.

Is his health such a concern that this has to be a punt year? Cael had also said we look to get 2 years out of him, so if he doesn't go this year, does that almost defacto prove he has to get a medical year?

For Cael to question his future this year so early, tells me there is definitely a back story. I wish I knew more, but how disappointing if we have to wait yet one more year!

Did I miss something? When did Cael question his future?

All I remember is Cael's non-answer when asked if Ono will start this year.

That’s good to hear, but is he spending too much time with his girlfriend?

I seem to remember Abe being not too shabby after only one year in the room to learn folkstyle. Of course some of our fans feel that fourth is a severe underachievement that warrants an immediate portal replacement.

As soon as Cael starts giving real concrete details on starters, etc, in his preseason banter, I’m all in for it. But for now, this is a nothing burger for me.
