I am someone who lost weight the wrong way... I allowed my kids to lose weight only by eating right (cut out the junk) and maybe, maybe skipping dinner the night before a morning weigh in. No extra workouts and didn't even bring the 'sweat' choices into play (except work hard at practice). Probably a top reason kids quit wrestling... no fun to starve
me as well tried to make 95 from 125 my senior yr ended up at 103 still too much loss and it cost me at the end of the yr I was just to drained to do anything!

It's really should be 4yrs of eligibility free style is not folk style 2 different disciplines. It's like Australian football players don't have it count against them.

Just imagine the SEC stashing football players abroad for a few years in a "developmental league."

Kinda like how, before scholarships had to be 100% football, SEC schools had 6-3/250 tennis players who ran a 4.4 40.
They get 3 yrs out of the top shelf players, than they enter the draft. Also the only thing the ncaa should do is to get as much talent in college as possible , no age or country of origin restrictions and as many years as it take to get 4yrs of eligibility.

If last year didn't count yes if it did then 2. Not sure if his clock is paused this year or if it was last year as well.
I know i am making assumptions about the logic skills of the NCAA, but if he didn't compete last year because the NCAA couldn't make a decision, then I would make the assumption that he has the eligibility he showed up with.

In high school my daughter was a Sabre fencer. We travelled all over the country to competitions. She was good but by no means elite. We visited and number colleges that had fencing teams her junior year and one of the schools she was interested in was Duke. We made an appointment to visit the school and sat down with the fencing coach and someone from the AD’s office. They were very interested in having my daughter join their program which stuck me as a bit odd because she was good, but not that good. Apparently they were willing to take some marginally talented kids who had outstanding academic credentials - which my daughter had - to offset some of the less academically gifted athletes on the rosters of the school’s other teams. Surprise, surprise… In the end she decided she wanted to stay closer to home and went to a D3 school, NYU.

I think somebody told you a half-truth.

This sounds exactly like how every school managed APR (the NCAA academic progress system). The problem with this story is: APR is judged at the sport level, not the school level. So it's more likely that Duke had some academically marginal fencers, but whoever around the fencing team didn't want to admit that.

More generally: that's a wide-spread practice, or at least was before the portal became so wide-open. Every team at every school offering scholarships did this when recruiting for depth -- talent was a factor, but at least equally important was rounding out the roster with students who would graduate within the NCAA's timeline and not transfer out.

No, his story doesn’t have anything to do with APR.

Most Ivies and close-to-Ivies have average standards for the entirety of their incoming classes per sport in terms of test scores and GPA.

For instance, at a school like Brown - ahem, maybe I know somebody there - the incoming wrestling class has to average maybe 1380 on the SATs (or equivalent). I am making that number up, but there is a number Taking a kid who scored 1540 allows them to take the kid that will really help the team but only scored 1210.

I believe when it comes to Fencing, there is no difference between DI, DII, & DIII. They are all in one division, including NYU.

OK, but that's still within each sport.

The OP's example would mean Brown Wrestling team gets a higher number so that Brown Basketball can get a lower number. Is this what you're saying?

As opposed to Brown Wrestling's number being based on the current roster's grades or other criteria limited to the wrestling team.

Funny, my sister went to Brown. She got in because of water polo and the color of her skin; good grades (she was top-10 in her ~800 graduating class) but SAT was below that of "the kid that will really help the team".

Can’t say anything with certainty but we -ncaa- have a ton of foreign swimmers

While they all competed against one another regardless of division they’re not all, at least back then, on exactly a level playing field. The D3 schools don’t offer scholarships, for example and the travel is mostly by bus. In addition to Duke we also had a number of conversations with members of the Penn State coaching staff at a regional competition at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs when Kaidanov was the fencing coach after they spotted me in the elevator sporting a Penn State t-shirt and hat and couldn’t figure out who the hell I was. The PSU pitch felt pretty similar to what we’d experienced when visiting Duke. Penn State was simply too far from home for her to seriously consider at the time.

my coach would not have been happy with that approach. he would have benched me for lack of discipline to be over that much! Regardless, i fudged my weight for practice sheets and often fought not to drink the fluid from my tooth brush.... 24 hr dry fasts? that was nothing.
lol well my coach was diff kind of guy!
