Look for Bolden, Amile, Frank, Jason and Matt to be huge. I want Luke's shot to start falling NOW!

I hope that's true with Grayson as just a rest day... in regards to Giles, I want to believe that today was precautionary and just not overdoing it too much.

Not the report I was hoping for.

These aren't the droids you're looking for.

DECODING THE DUKE BASKETBALL OPEN PRACTICE

The 2016-17 Duke Basketball team to Coach K Court before several thousand people in Cameron Indoor Stadium this past Saturday. To the average observer, there may not have been a lot of takeaways, but a closer look reveals specific plans.

Great read. It sounds like the main focus early on is being a good defensive team which I like to hear because we already know that the offense should be there.

I think it is a safe bet that most practices the entire season will have that similar level of intensity. There is a lot of talent in that locker room.

Duke basketball practice provides thrills despite duo's inactivity

Two of the prized pieces of the Duke men’s basketball team weren’t showing their talents on the court during Saturday morning’s open practice at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The crowd that turned out to watch from the upper level of the building seemed to appreciate what was witnessed nonetheless. Their cheers turned to roars at times.

This team is just begging for a guard with good vision and anticipation. With all this firepower and length, we could use one outlet man. You put Tyus Jones on this team and we're unbeatable. We're still insanely good but we might not make the best decisions in transition.

Hell I would even settle for a sophomore Derryck Thornton

Attended the open practice and it was fun - my 6 year olds first trip to Cameron & he was in awe.
- Kennard added muscle, is a gunner & has that swagger
- Tatum reminds me of Scottie Pippen, long & graceful. Mid-range game is strong
- Jackson is built like J-Will
- Amile is great leader & vocal
- Jones looks like a 35 year old with the beard. His D will improve this year.
- Bolden has an NBA body
- Jav hit his head on backboard breaking up an alley oop
- K went off when bad shots were being taken, it was amausing
- Nate could still play, quick as a cat in drills
- White will develop into solid player

Coaches spent a lot of time on man defense which looked solid b-c of the length. I could spend an entire day in the Duke athletics museum, very cool. New additions on campus are amazing.

My thoughts from practice.

Some highlights..

Grayson didn't practice. It was hard to hear K talking but I thought I heard him say Allen was getting treatment. Allen didn't practice but he was walking good. I had to step out for moment but heard that Allen dunked at the end of practice and the fans got loud. I can't confirm that but I did hear the crowd. I think Allen is fine.

Giles didn't practice and had a big wrap thing on his knee. My thoughts.... (and this is only my opinion I have No inside info). We all know K and Duke keep injuries info very low key and nothing really gets out. Part of me wonders if this was a strategic move with Giles and maybe even Grayson I mean you open up practice #2 to Duke fans but anybody (other teams) could come in and watch and no one would know. I'm trying to go to the Emily K benefit in 2 weeks to see the team practice again. By then one would think if Giles is healthy he would be in practice.

Tatum is the real deal. His cousin over the summer kept telling me this and now I have seen it live. We need to enjoy the 1 year we will see him. At one point in practice he had a quick step and shook DeLaurier. Tatum will break some ankles with his moves this season. And he can drain the three. It will be tough for opposing teams to defend him.

DeLaurier had a good practice. I could see him getting some minutes.

Amile looks really good. He looks strong as well. Amile had a great practice.

Bolden is big and strong. He looks to play back to basket at times and had some great dunks in practice that got the fans cheering. I look forward to him, Amile, and Giles working together!

Luke went after a loose ball and hit the court. The crowd cheered loudly when they saw this.

Frank Jackson has great on ball defense. He looks to be able to help out at the point as well.

Overall. Jackson, Tatum, and Amile impressed me the most.

At the end of practice K ran a drill (not sure what it's called) but the team had 4 minutes to put up 120 points running length of court both ways. I kept looking at the scoreboard and I think each shot was only 1 point no matter where they scored. With one minute to go... it looked like no way they could hit 120 points. It got down to the last 10 seconds and down to the very last second and the team hit 120 points. The crowd erupted in a loud roar seeing the team make the goal.

It was great timing to see a practice right before the football game.

I see in the video above that Luke worked on the ball some. It seems like their will be a "PG by committee" scenario, with Grayson being the primary lead guard when he is in. That is likely to be 35 minutes a game, even with this depth. And I don't mean that as a knock - if you have a Grayson Allen you play the heck out of him.

Skee, I can remember that drill from my playing days. We had less time to do it though. If we did not get it, we had to keep doing it. It was usually after some conditioning drills as well. Tough drill when you are already tired from a 2 12/ practice. Preseason sucks for practices!

Ok cool. Yeah it was an interesting drill to see.
I could tell the players were tired. They were missing shots left and right but then started to step it up. I thought no way they would get to 120 but they pulled it off. I know it's only practice #2 but it still shows this team may be able to handle performing under pressure.

ESPN Goodman reporting Giles had knee surgery on Monday expected to be out six weeks. Don't know if anyone else has anymore information regarding this? Sounds like a knee scope (arthroscopy of his left knee).

I was most impressed by Frank's poise, maturity and on ball defense. He really surprised me as that was the first time seeing him in person. He really hounded Luke when he was handling the ball.

Amile is just a man. We are so lucky to have him for another year. His leadership is Shane like to me. He is that good of a leader.

As far as the PG situation, i'd be surprised if it wasn't a rotating spot where even tatum brings the ball up during certain parts of the game/season.

Speaking of Tatum- he is really polished. he had a couple times where he just shook his defender and rose up and nailed a jumper.

Overall it was disappointing for the crowd to not get to see Grayson- watching him on the bench the majority of practice i figured it was nothiing more than a sore hammy. Sounds like that might be it at most- he'll be fine.

As Skee said, the highlight for the crowd was the last drill K ran. 4:15- have to get 120 buckets. They had exactly 60 made baskets with 2min to go and I didn't think they'd get there, but with the bucket at the buzzer to hit exactly 120 made shots the place went nuts. A lot of fun!

He'd be great to still have for sure, but not sure he'd ever put up great assist:turnover numbers. Give me someone like a London Perrantes and we'd average 95 ppg. Hopefully Allen and Luke can create more with the pass. It will certainly be interesting to see how this group flows on offense.

Hopefully, with so many guys who can shoot, attack off the dribble, and pass, this team won't need a true PG while running their motion offense. The key on O will be everyone moving without the ball and moving the ball around as opposed to 4 guys standing around and watching whoever has the ball try to create all on his own. Lets not forget that Giles is an excellent passer. I liket how Grayson was able to pass off of dribble drives last year. This year, he ( and everyone else) will have a lot more options to pass to once he gets into the lane than last year.

Great to hear about Franks on ball D. If he can handle quick point guards, that addresses Duke's biggest concern on D.

What will be interesting to see is how the offense runs when Grayson, Frank and Luke are all in at the same time. They will all facilitate the offense but who if any will take the lead role? Personally, I like 2 combo guards in the line up or even combo guards and a point forward. The more good ball handlers the better.

We should all have a code word to yell out at these events to identify ourselves to each other. I'll be the guy who yells out, "Nev-ADD-uh!"

Pg might. E the issue as far as getting guys easy baskets and guarding (since Frank and Grayson will only get to guard two guards in practice which works if you're guarding two guards in games. It much different than guarding a Frank Mason, Joel Berry, or any natural pg with pg skills like quickness, shiftiness etc)
