Opposing fan interactions

stealing from Sky’s UNC thread, but opening it to all opposing fans and any interaction you had with them.

Mine was last Spring after the tournament. It happened to be when my sister had a gender reveal party at my parents’ house. It’s about midnight and the house is filled with KU fans and me. All of us have had a few drinks by this point.

They all knew I was a Duke fan but no one had said anything all night. Suddenly, some husband of one of my sister’s friends made some comment about Duke losing to KU to me in front of everyone and the room got silent. I said something along the lines of “KU played a great game but at the end of the day 5 is still greater than 3.”

He replied, “what are you talking about? KU has 5 national championships too!” I replied, “No they don’t....wait...are you counting Helms titles?!?!?” He said, “Yes! They count too!” I chuckled, looked him dead in the eye and said, “that’s cute.”

Then there was an awkward silence and somebody finally broke it by changing the subject. Later, my dad (a huge KU fan for 70+ years) said “yeah, I don’t count them. Not sure why anyone would.”

A few years ago when I was on a family vacation at White Lake here in NC. I was going into a restaurant and one of the employees held the door open for me but as she was holding the door for me she said “you can’t come in because we don’t allow Duke fans”. She was mostly joking and I knew that but it was still really annoying and in my opinion it’s something that you really shouldn’t say to a customer coming to spend money at the business that you work at even if you’re just joking around.

I was at a BW3 watching when we were trailing unc and came back to win. The waitress was giving me crap about being a Duke fan, so with about 4 or 5' to go, I told her if Duke wins, her tip is 20.00, but if unc wins, it is 5.00
You should have heard her cheering Everytime we scored.
Once it was over and we won, she came over to collect her tip, and I said, I just have to ask, if you will become a Duke fan for 20.00, what would you have done for 100.00?
She just picked up her tip, laughed and walked away!!

Another one I've had, that I've told in here before.
I was at a bar close to home, that I was a regular at, and had a lot of good friends there. I actually watched the 2010 finals there.
Anyway, some guy I had never seen started ribbing me about my Duke shirt. It started out just fun back and forth banter, but as the night went on, and the beers kept flowing, he started getting really obnoxious. I finally just told him I wasn't here to argue with him and to just let it go and go have some fun. Well, he ended up spitting on my shirt. Now, I am by no means a badass, but that crossed way over the line. I came from South Georgia with a right that connected just perfectly, and lights out, game over.
I guess since I was a regular and he was not known, he was forced to leave and I got a pardon!!!

Just remembered this one too. The reason I was at the bar mentioned above to watch the finals is this:
A buddy and I went to a sports bar here to watch it. We got there, I don't remember 7 or 8:00?
We walked in, and they said we are closing. Really? This Early?
So we went to another place, walked in, and same thing, we are closing.
There is no doubt in my mind that they closed so no one could watch Duke win a title in their bar. I haven't been back to either since....they will never get another dollar of my money.

In 2016, I wore my lucky Duke tie to work (devil logo on that perfect Pantone 287 color) the day of the Duke vs Oregon game (I live in Oregon). Obviously my tie proved to not be so lucky. Got a lot of text messages and comments that night and the next day, but they weren’t anywhere near the level I’ve gotten from KU and UNC fans. I was at the game in Greensboro for LeHigh in 2012 and I was in a dorm room at KU in 2003. Those were rough nights.

This reminds me of a bar I used to go to. I was really tight with the bar owner and his wife because I had been friends with their daughter since high school. I had a friend that was dating a guy that I didn’t like at all because he treated her like crap and the bar owner knew I didn’t like the guy and I had made it known that if the guy ever said or did the wrong thing to my friend when I was around that I was going to kick his *** and the bar owner told me to do whatever I had to do and I wouldn’t get kicked out for it. There were a handful of us that could pretty much do whatever we wanted. A few examples: a buddy of mine would go to the liquor store and buy a fifth of Jager and he’d also pick up a case of red bull and we’d go out to his truck on Friday nights and drink Jager Bombs & other shots and the bar owner would sometimes come out to the truck and do shots with us. Another thing he’d let us do was he’d still let us smoke inside the bar after North Carolina passed the law banning smoking in bars and restaurants. He would just tell us to put our cigarettes out if we saw someone pull up that we didn’t recognize. That bar closed down almost 7 years ago and I still miss that place.

A few years ago when I was still working and selling kitchen cabinets i went out to measure an existing kitchen. These folks had just moved in and were interested in remodeling their kitchen. The woman had on a UK shirt. I didn't tell her I was a Duke fan because I just didn't want to get into the subject of me being a Duke fan especially with a potential buyer. It was at the time when UK had just hired Billy G. as their head coach. I ask her about Billy G and what kind of coach UK fans were expecting from him. She felt like there were gonna be some natty banners hung soon. At the time of course Billy G already had some character issues. It seems to me that a few really coaches had turned them down already including Billy Donovan out of Florida who had just won back to back natty's . How hot a coach was thatIt fact Billy G. was either their 3rd. or 4th. option. Here's basically what she said and I'm paraphrasing. He's about the best. He's who we wanted. We get who we want. If we wanted Roy Williams then we would get Roy Williams. If we want Coach K we will get Coach K. We also get the recruits we want. If they aren't at Kentucky we don't want them. She also really trashed Pitino and Tubby Smith. I really don't remember if I got the sale or not because I quoted high. Of course the rest is history . Billy G lost his job and they hired another coach with questionable character. Great thread. OFC

I hate KU fans. They are pathetic across the board.
Their number of wins in football the last 8 years look like soccer scores:
3, 1, 2, 0, 3, 3, 1, 2, 3

I truly enjoy when UNC or UK fans try to get under my skin. When they realize it isn't working they become unglued.Good stuff.

This year changed uniforms in hoops league I run to Duke blue, some parents clearly didn't like it.

That’s one of the few bad things about White Lake. It’s a popular vacation spot for people in NC and even SC but it’s a really small town, so they don’t really have too many eating options actually in White Lake, so if you don’t eat at one of the few places in White Laks then you have to drive 15-20 minutes to Elizabethtown to eat and it’s usually a really long wait time at most of the places in Elizabethtown.

Please be patient with this old fart and read in it's entirity. It means a lot to me.

It seems to me the only time the uncheaters (have I ever mentioned that unc is the dirtiest program
ever in the NCAA ) start strutting around like a cock rooster is when they beat us or they win some kind of championship? That's when I usually have problems with them. I've have so many stories I can tell over the years. I'm sure some of you think in my senile old age I tend to stretch to truth. I don't. You just have to live in tar heel county, N.C. all your life to understand where I'm coming from and what I've had to deal with. I am so ever grateful for Coach K and what he has done for the basketball program. For one he has turned Duke into THE PROGRAM. Because of that to use a term our thr friends love to use is "band wagon fans." Well if that's that's what they want to call post Duke fans then I am proud to call them Duke fans. At least once they got on the wagon they stayed on it. Unc band wagon fans jump on and off like rabbits during mating season. I appreciate and value every stinking one of you. I also am grateful for Coach Cut. Yeah I know Duke hasn't won a natty with him but before he came unc owned us. He owns fedora . OFC in a row and he's a better coach than mack brown. Not a better snake oil salesman but a better coach. Mack brown knew. He was there. He's dirty and he will screw up. OK enough of this DSouthr post.Hope it makes some sense. OFC

I’m kinda a young fan, started watching back in 08-09 season when I was 13. I remember walking into class after the Cheats won it all that year, caught so much **** from everybody, but hoo boy that next season was a great second season. I still remember watching the title game with my dad and both of us screaming at the top of lungs when Hayward clanked that shot. And the Rivers shot? I took off screaming around the house, I love my Dukies, doesn’t matter if we’re the best or worst squad in the country. Also GTHC, GTH.

One story that I would like to relate is this one. It happened during the 1997 season when Coach K got sick. I had known this man a long time. He is a die hard unc fan and played baseball for them in the 70's. I think he still may own some relief pitching records there. His son and my son played youth baseball against each other and played high school baseball together. They were friends and still are from kindergarten until now. His son has been to my sons birthday parties and sleep overs. The father and I were always cordial. One day during the '97 season I was walking into a downtown restaurant to get a bite to eat. As I was going through the door a car went by a the driver in a loud voice yells "COACH K SUCKS" so loud that other people around looked at him. It was our Carolina family golden unc fan. Now here's the clincher. He'said an insurance agent. About a week after this happened he'said knocking on my door trying to sell me not only life insurance but homeowners and auto. Karma kicked in. I told him I had a package deal already and even if he could save me some money I already had my plan with one of the most successful agents in town. A fellow Duke fan. Now he says hemail doesn't remember the COACH K SOCKS day but if I'm lying I'm flying and I can't get two inches off the floor. When I do run into him he doesn't mention Duke, Coach K or even unc anymore. Point goes to skysdad. He can't help it though. He's a tar heel fan . It's his nature. Bless his heart. OFC

I feel live everyone may be biased based off the area that they live. Here in Cincinnati, the college basketball fandom is mainly UK fans with some UC, Xavier, and Indiana fans mixed in. In my experience, UK fans are by far the worst and nothing comes close. A brief summary...

UK- I wore a Zion jersey out a couple weeks ago, a UK fan asked me, while I was pumping gas, if I helped pay for Zion's family's new home in North Carolina. True story.
Xavier- Good people. They really know their basketball.
UC- Good people too. UC and Xavier fans HATE each other, campus's are 2 miles apart. UC fans always feel like they don't get the respect they deserve. (and I agree with them.)
Indiana- AS BAD AS UK FANS, they have just been terrible for 10+ years, so they don't get alot of opportunities to talk smack. Huge fans of using racial slurs against you if your visiting their stupid arena.

WOW that’s the lowest of the low. If I ever saw someone berating a kid because of the team they pull for I’d beat their *** it wouldn’t matter whether or not i pulled for the team that the kid pulled for.

I heard Demarcus Cousins did something similar.
Playing at Tennessee and a little kid asked for his autograph, and he told the kid he doesn't sign autographs for UT fans....I don't don't if that's a true story, but I heard it from somewhere

Yeah I have thought about that over the years. I had my food before he came out so I hope not. Maybe my waitress new what kind of over the top asshat UNC fan he was and saw it and went and told him (hopefully afterward). Someone had to tell him for him to just bust out of the kitchen like that. It was like an alarm went off in his head when heard there was a hardcore Duke fan out there with a tat and deck out in Championship swag. Dude was ready for a confrontation. F him, he had a shot at the title and didn't take it. I was ready.

Racists in Indiana? I’m shocked

It was also the same classless fans saying “**** You Grayson” last year as well.

I grew up 30 minutes from KU. Basketball is all they have (like Kentucky) and they get butt hurt easily.
