It's been a bad week here in the southern part of the state. The Greenbrier River rose 15' in a 5 hr period last night, catching a lot of people off guard with the speed of the flood on such a large river. A lot of devastation with this flood being the 3rd highest on the historical records for the river.

Scary bad!

Sad to hear. Heard there has been 3 deaths.

15' in a 5 hr period? That's scary!

My home part of Southern WV hasn't been hit as bad from what I have heard.

I saw some incredible footage of the waters power, including a house floating downstream fully engulfed in flames.

We just went through our own devastating flood in SC last September, so I know what is in-store for those hit by the flood. Luckily we had flood insurance, I am sure most in rural Southern WV are without.

This affected more in the Greenbrier, Summers, Nicholas, Monroe, Raleigh, Fayette county areas from what I have seen. Most of the coal fields were spared this time.

Lot of damage still to be assessed, hoping people were able to get out of the way. Many houses totally destroyed while too many to count with water in the homes at this time.

Sporting events are trivial during these dire times but looks like the golf courses and surrounding areas at the Greenbrier are hit hard also - not sure how this will affect the upcoming Classic for those that had plans. Just a side note to the important problems going on here.

Up to 14 last I heard but many more unaccounted for.

These were flash floods that happened so fast - from small creeks to large rivers that rose quickly. I'm afraid there will be several more.

23 dead as of 10pm.

Funny you mention Buffalo Creek, the Kanawha was as high this afternoon as I've seen it since the day the gob pile burst on Buffalo Creek. I remember walking out to the old ferry landing with my Grandpa while we were in Nitro checking on his brother the afternoon before the pile broke at Buffalo Creek. Grandpa pointed out a rock that was the high end of the old landing ramp and said, "When it tops that rock, it's time to get out." It was way up the rock today and back then.

That flood was so bad because you had snowmelt added to it. It took a long time for the water to go down in the southern part of the state. **** you couldn't count the hill slides that rain and melt caused. It seemed like every mile of hillside had four or five big slides and bunch of little ones. For the next couple of years when we would get a good hard rain, they'd start going again.

Thoughts & prayers for all those affected by the flood.

My family is originally from Southern W.Va. & I have spent a whole lot of time there. It's a place very dear to me. Godspeed to everyone there now.
