Hey, I'm on vacation in Vero Beach for the week and had a friend email me asking about the weather for the spring game, so I was thinking it was this Saturday, so I answered him and posted this thread erroneously. Oh well, back to the beach and the bar...

How hot is it? Afternoon showers? Are you playing disc golf? Any good music bars?

Sure, the last two days were pretty hot (near 90F), but we had an awesome line of t-storms come through last night and it's only around 80F today and should be around 80F for highs the rest of the week - not too bad for mid-April. And the ocean is 75F, which is perfect for swimming.
Came down with the wife, our son and his longtime girlfriend (the new ERW Terminal A, which was great - guess they're over their startup hiccups) and stayed a couple of nights on the beach in Vero, since my sister was hosting her daughter/son-in-law and twin grandsons (5 year old hellions, but a ton of fun), but they just went back to Charlotte, so we're at my sister's. And my dad lives about a mile from my sister, plus my older brother is also down (looking for a place to possibly live - he's retiring soon) - I'm the only one who likes the cold and snow, lol.
Had a couple of great dinners - at Spiro's (Greek), my dad's favorite place (he likes seeing the saganaki lit on fire with brandy, lol), and Kilted Mermaid, my favorite place (and my wife's) - it's a really eclectic, funky bar/restaurant with amazing food (I had octopus, a samosa and fondue, all of which were fantastic - like I said, eclectic) and live entertainment 3-4 nights a week (they had a woman playing solo guitar and singing last night; last time down got to see a great bluegrass/folk band); it was opened by a Scottish expat, who is a huge mountain of a man who likes to walk around in his kilt (and nobody questions him on it, lol).
Taking the rest of the crew to play disc golf tomorrow in Vero (they have a short, but fun 9-hole course) and should get out a bit on my own later in the week, plus we'll do some jet skiing and maybe go see the manatees and do a fanboat tour (my son's girlfriend hasn't done that yet) and we'll have at least one poker/casino trip as my dad loves that (he turns 90 in a few months - that's him in the pic, obviously.

If you are there on the 19th there will be a rocket launch you can see from the beach..

well it is a small rocket.. apparently, there is a bridge in Titusville that many people will walk out on. There was a late night/early am launch a few weeks back that was spectacular even from Orlando area. The big rocket with the crew for space station. Next time they do something like that I think I might want to try that bridge. I can only imagine how this rescheduled launch in texas is going to look in a couple days... that thing is a giant rocket.

yeah, we have friends in Cocoa Beach who were talking about this one being good (it's almost as close as Titusville to site 40 and the weather should be good for it). Someday would love to see a big launch...
true! when you think of scale of how many miles away you will be even at the closest points.. might as well be double the miles, IMHO. 12 vs 6 miles with a rocket moving as fast as it is for as little time as it is? Now.. maybe if you know the rocket will track away from you rather than closer.. maybe picking a side to be on... but we know its headed out over the ocean either way.
Thanks, he's doing ok. Still sharp as a tack, but the body is a little rickety, as you might guess. Just moved from his condo into an independent living facility in Vero a year ago. He didn't really want to, but socially, he wasn't doing anything the past couple of years living by himself (especially with him having to give up driving a year ago due to his eyesight) and this place has a lot more activities for him and he's made friends.
He still complains about it, but it's pretty good - I stayed with him for a week last year to kind of make sure he was doing ok and the food they serve is pretty good (3 meals a day; he also has a small kitchen), they have a nurse on site and plenty of activities, plus I got to meet a few of his buddies. Unfortunately, his IBS keeps him from traveling more than 30-45 minutes away, so he won't come back up to NJ any more - we've tried to convince him to take a train with a sleeper car/bathroom, but no dice so far. Anyone with aging parents knows that they can be a little ornery and stubborn, lol. So, now I have to come down to FL 2-3 times a year to see him instead of the old once a year (and I don't really love FL), when he used to come up 1-2 times a year. No biggie.

Love these stories. 109 years old. Lives in his own home in Little Falls, NJ. Eats hamburgers and pizza. Drinks Ovaltine every day. Has never exercised. Will reconsider all the advice of longevity "experts" who say to exercise 3X weekly. Harumph!
(this man obviously has been blessed with great genes).
