Not a diner but somewhat related, Stan's Chitch's in Bound Brook is closing this weekend after fifty years.
Such a bummer. I've been going there for 40 years. They announced it with only maybe 1.5 weeks notice so the place has been a zoo. I tried to go around 4:30pm last Friday, and forget about it. I saw a picture online from Saturday and people were lined up outside waiting.
Not sure who bought the property but a longtime classic shuttered just like that.

Somerset Diner is 24 hours still.

I had to go to the emergency room last summer with a possible broken ankle, arrived around 10pm and didn’t get discharged till 5 am.

Grabbed a cheeseburger and sweet potato fries to go on the way home

Definitely a classic, spent many late nights there. We tried to buy the picture of the fish wearing a knitted sweater, but they wouldn't sell it to us.

At the rt 9 rt 34 split heading south on 9 there was nothing at all on 9 until Old Bridge- Matawan Rd. when I was in High School.
Except on the right was a Nike base back in the woods.
Yup I know it well. Worked there during summers for the OB BOE busses while at Rutgers. Took a walk around the Nike base one day even though it was off limits.

I actually had a group of my old SWMHS buddies lined up and prepared to buy the Peter Pank when the family decided to get out. In the end, the redevelopment was worth more than the business so now it's a f'in Wawa, because we absolutely needed more of those.
i agree... i was hoping that PPDiner was going to be replaced by another DINER... now the WAWA killed any hopes of that. BOMBER Country !!!!

And when I was a kid, before the Peter Pank, there was a bar/restaurant called Clair & Coby's where I spent a lot of time spinning on the bar stools next to my dad. Years later, me and coworkers would go to Peter Pank for breakfast after night shift at Dupont.
I know you're younger than me, but did you ever go to the Raritan Diner on Bordentown Ave in So. Amboy. I think it fit like 12 people in there. It was in one of Woody Allen's movies.
Holy Shi$... I loved clair & coby's.... Outback bites.... give me that old family style restaurant and food any day.

Anything left there? And were/are there any underground tunnels?
There was a missile range on the area that is now Harshorne Woods in Highlands/Middletown.
A good listing of former missile sites:

Things just not the same after COVID.... Diners and restaurants/chains.. not open as late as they used to be, and service is struggling to get back to where is was before. Give me the old PETER PANK Diner days... open late, legacy waiters and waiteresses... I drive home at 9pm on Saturday and many places (except TOMMY's LOL) are closing up... SUCKS.
Maybe if wait staff was paid more than 5.26/hr (or whatever the pay rate is now), there would be more people working in diners.

Does anyone know if The Bayway Diner is still open in Elizabeth?
Also the place on Morris Ave. near Kean. Was that the Queen Elizabeth Diner? I think it's called the Tropicana now?
Two of my former late, late night dining options.
I think the one on Morris Ave was the Betsy Ross Diner and then became Tropicana. My family used to go there every Sunday AM after church at St Michael's. Phil Rizzuto also ate there most Sunday's. I think the Queen Elizabeth was on the corner of Route 1 and North Avenue. Park Avenue Diner was our go to after skating a the rink in Warninanco Park (before playing hockey from 11 PM to 6 AM. Great times!

The one in South Plainfield now has a Kohl's, Marshalls & Home Goods, Joe's Crab House, Brick House Tavern & Dick's and many others in that shopping center.
The location of Middlesex Mall used to be an Airport where my parents took me to watch the planes landing. It was a site that planes were first used for Air Mail.

My father was just talking about Clair & Coby's yesterday funny. Was located where the Outback is now in Old Bridge. They're putting a ton of new homes and businesses on Rte 9 S and it's already a disaster there.
After further thought into the deep reaches of my brain I am now remembering the Peter Pank did not replace Clair & Coby's. It replaced Coby's. When they moved to the Rt 9 34 split they changed it to Clair & Coby's.

There was still some fun stuff there in the early 80’s when I was running HS cross country. RBC used to go all over for that…(Harshorne, Bell Labs, Spring Lake boardwalk, Ft Monmouth).

The Tropicana is definitely open and still going strong. Don’t know about The Bayway Diner.

Ahhhh, the Raritan Diner, my favorite diner of all time. Peter Pank Diner? I don't ever remember
being there sober.

I went to Somerset diner in college. Some lunatic started glomming on to us. We tolerated the guy. Then two cops came in and he started saying **** to them. So we left and one of the cops said he was gonna breathalyze all of us because of this lunatic. One guy was okay to drive. We had to convince the cop that we didn't know the guy. Finally the guy announced he was a street professor and we were all aliens. I looked at the cop and said "really? We'll leave this guy for you". He told us to get lost.

Meh. Corned beef hash was good.

Get in line. I tried to buy the "Sweater Fish" in 1983 and later, for my then girlfriend (now wife) in 1987 - thought that thing was so cool, especially with the yarn from the sweater having been caught on a rock in the painting, starting to unravel. In fact, I always used to wonder if the guys from Weezer had seen that painting and if it had somehow inspired Undone (Sweater Song).

If you want to destroy my sweater (whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa)
Hold this thread as I walk away (as I walk away)
Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked
Lying on the floor
Lying on the floor
I've come undone

Also, our friends jokingly called the Somerset Diner, Erik's Diner, since I used to always try to get everyone to go there after the Melody closed, back in the day. Love diners...

Somerset and Park Ave are the only ones left I know of that are still open 24/7. Even the venerable old Reo in Woodbridge isn't 24/7 any more, although they said they might still bring that back last time I was there a few months ago and Ponzio's in my old stomping grounds in Cherry Hill, is only open until 9 pm! Same for the one here in town, the Metuchen Diner. Sucks.

Not a diner, but IHOP on Centennial Ave. in Piscataway is open 24 hours.

Popular with RU students from the Busch campus.

Late one night a few years back, I saw former RU hoops player Candido Sa being tutored there.

My guess, and I have no inside information, is that it will be another apartment complex. These complexes have been sprouting up all over Bound Brook, Somerville and Raritan along the Raritan Valley line of NJ Transit. Another one was just built a block or so west of Chitch's, in addition to the two built east of it.

The 29th is the last day. I heard people waited outside for 3 hours to get in the other night. when it was first announced they ran out of dough by 8pm and stopped making pizza. No inside info here as well but word on street they sold to a developer.

We ended up going last night around 6:30 and our party waited on line for about 40 minutes before getting a table. The staff limited orders to one pie for every two patrons, and no takeout. Pizza was just like I remember it.

Thanks for the info!! I was going to go last night and use my gift certificate up, but guess I'll just keep that with my Chitch's tshirt as a memento of the place. Used to go there with my mom all the time as a kid and later as an adult, so for me, I found it sort of funny timing the place is closing on what would have been her birthday, 4/29.

Yeah, to your above post, I figured the same thing -- "luxury rentals" probably will sprout out there. Well for the family, might as well cash out while the getting is good. They've dealt with a lot over 50 years in Bound Brook, so no time to cash out like the present I guess. Can't make pizzas forever.

My friend just bought a diner in Monmouth. They close at 10. Just no late night demand and the cost to stay open doesn't make sense. Also I think kids are different today. The bars close early too. So late night disco fries after going out has been replaced with edibles at home and Uber eats.

The world famous Top's Diner in East Newark stopped serving past 11 a few years before COVID due to the crowd they were attracting after the clubs in Newark closed around 2 AM.
Their daytime crowd is mostly Newark office workers, there by default due to lack of restaurants in downtown Newark.
I once fell asleep at the counter while attempting to drink coffee to sober up after being at the nudie bar across the street until closing time.
That was in the mid-70's.
Buddy of mine went to Tops after a Halloween Party. He was dressed as a clown. Some bad guys came in and were causing trouble and the "clown" did a number on them.

Covid aftermath or not if it was profitable, they would be open.

...well.. i have nothing to do with that, so not sure why you are dumping it on my post. But, for the record, waiter and waitress wages have always been scrutinized as always being unfortunately low, which is true, but certainly not an new debate.
