He joined the Temptations when founding member Elbridge "Al" Bryant was fired from the group. Ruffin originally sang backgrounds for the Temptations, with the lead being handled by either Eddie Kendricks or Paul Williams. However, Smokey Robinson wrote "My Girl" with the idea of Ruffin singing the lead, and after that song Ruffin was the lead singer of the Temptations. Alas, he became addicted to cocaine, and was fired from the group in 1968. To celebrate:
