Without looking, I'll guess it was Rickey Henderson. He had to be in his early 40s when he played in SD in the early 2000s.

One of the hints I was going to give was "He played for two minor league teams in NJ." Besides the A's Rickey had two stints with the Newark Bears.

I remember seeing the A's play a couple of times that year. Mike Norris, who won 20 games in the majors, was also on that team.

When I was a kid we did a little league outing to a White Sox / A’s game. Seats were in right field. This was pre-cell phone era and the dads were trying to remember Rickey’s contract. Finally one of them shouted: “hey Rickey, how much do you make?” He turned and shouted back a number. Can’t remember what it was or even if we heard it clearly, but was pretty funny that he responded given all of the taunts from fans that players have to tune out during games.
